Civic Engagement

For my civic engagement, I took my daughter to a Meet the Candidates night at the
Orem Senior Center on October 16, 2017 from 7-9pm. We were there for almost the
whole 2 hours talking to people about the election process. Since she just turned 18 last
year, this was her first time being able to vote so I wanted her to understand the process. I
believe that voting is important and one of the best ways to be civically engaged. I
wanted my daughter to see whom she would be able to vote for, get a feel for their
character and know what things they would like to accomplish in office.

This event connected us with these people in a better way than just reading what their
campaign leaflet said about them. We decided who to vote for based on how they spoke
with others, how knowledgeable they were about the questions we had (some were just
simple like how they felt about dog parks), and if they seemed to care about us or just
getting us to vote.

I feel that participating in these events does help us to be more responsible citizens by
making a more informed vote. I enjoyed the chance to see my daughter learning and
thinking about questions that were important to her. I believe that we all need to be more
civically involved in whatever way we can.
