QUESTION 1 [50 marks]

An ideal-gas mixture has the following volumetric analysis component % by Volume, N2 60% and CO2
40%. Determine:

i. the analysis on a mass basis. [6 marks]

ii. the mass of 1 m3 of this gas when P = 1.5 MPa and T = 30oC [8 marks]

iii. the specific heats at 300 K [12 marks]

iv. the required heat transfer if the gas is heated in a steady-flow process such that the

temperature is increased by 120oC. [12 marks]

v. the final temperature if the mixture undergoes an isentropic process from 0.1 MPa, 30oC, to 0.2

MPa. [12 marks]

QUESTION 2 [50 marks]

Liquid octane (C8H18) enters a combustion chamber at 25oC at a rate of 1.2 kg/min where it is mixed and
burned with 150 percent excess air that enters the combustion chamber at 25oC. If the combustion is
complete and the exit temperature of the combustion gases is 1200 K, determine:

i. the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio by mass. [8 marks]

ii. the mass flow rate of air [5 marks]

iii. the rate of heat transfer from the combustion chamber. [12 marks]

iv. the adiabatic flame temperature [15 marks]

v. state two pollution problems caused by this combustion process. [10 marks]
