Displacement
Objective: To use the process of displacement to obtain the data necessary to solve the dilemma while
modeling precision [and the lack of] in measurement.
Notes:
-Equation for % of error(accuracy)
-Displacement is accounting for a solid objects volume based on the amount of water that is displaced, or
pushed out of the way.
-1 cm = 1 mL
3
-initial volume = 70 mL
-Final volume = 72.5 mL
72.5 mL - 70 mL = 2.5 cm 3
Youre running out the door to catch the bus on the first day of school. You realize that you dont
have a dark blue marker and a light blue marker, two mandatory items on the supplies list you got over
the summer. Not wanting to miss the bus, but also not wanting to go unprepared on the very first day, you
wish you could freeze this moment in time, so you could grab the two markers, but which two markers
would you grab? With your bag bursting at the seams, youd only have 45 cm left of space to fit the two
3
markers in. Just like that, everything around you stops, and you realize that your wildest freeze frame
moment is now quick which marker combinations could you fit?
92 mL-70 mL = 22 cm 3

99 mL - 70 mL = 29 cm 3
29cm 3
(29cm -29)/29 x

91 mL - 70 mL = 21 cm 3
22cm 3
(21 cm - 22 cm) = -1
/ 22 cm = -0.045
x 100 = 4.54%
100 mL - 90 mL = 10 cm 3
11cm 3
(10 cm - 11 cm)= -1
-1 / 11 cm = 0.09
0.09 x 100 = 9.09%
