Medical Reflection
I attended the medical meeting hosted by the pre-health society and HOSA that
had four medical professionals sit at the front of the room while the students who
attended sat in rows in front of them. The two leaders from HOSA and the pre-health
society introduced the professionals and then went on to ask them general questions, like
what got them into their profession, what a typical day looks like, undergraduate and
graduate experience, etc. After those questions were asked, the students were able to ask
questions. The medical professionals included a surgical PA, a nurse, a dentist, and a vet.
There was no MD or DO in attendance, so I did not ask any questions. However, when
the topic turned towards applications and interviews, I was attentive. That is when I got
the most out of the meeting. Across the board, the professionals were very adamant about
us being individual in a way that would make the ones who view applications not forget
us. The surgical PA told us to even reverse the questions on the interviewers when the
time comes that they ask us if we have any questions for them. Another useful tip that the
PA and dentist gave us, was we need to make sure we connect ourselves somehow to the
community, either being a CNA or EMT, or even just doing community volunteer work.
Somehow that we can prove to the graduate school admissions that we are good people
