Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Alison Harrison Date: 12/04/17

Grade and Topic: 4th Grade Science Length of Lesson: 45 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Annette S. Cornelius School: University of Memphis-IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is part of a unit on cells. The students are learning about the basic unit of life, which
powers each of their individual bodies. This lesson revolves around the cell organelles and their
functions, which stems from TN state science standard 0407.1.1.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a WebQuest about the cell organelles and their functions, TLW be able to identify each organelle
and its function with 100% accuracy.
Given a computer, TLW be able to record a video demonstrating his or her knowledge of the cell
organelles and their functions with 100% accuracy.
Student Participation
All students will demonstrate their understanding of the cell organelles and their functions using two different
forms of technology. These assessments will make it clear that each individual was able to understand the
material.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

plant and animal cells.

2. Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a
distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats

Technology Integration
The students will use a WebQuest to learn about the cell organelles and their functions. This allows the student
to search for the information on his or her own, rather than the teacher lecturing to the students. Also, this
leaves the teacher available to answer any questions the students have regarding the material or the technology.
Additionally, students will be presenting their knowledge through either video or audio capture, which
demonstrates the students knowledge of the material and a variety of media formats.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
The students will be demonstrating their knowledge of the cell organelles and their functions through a
variety of media and formats.
The students must have knowledge of the terms cell, organelles, and function.
This lesson builds upon the previous lesson about cells being the basic unit of life for living things.
In the following lesson, students will make their own model of a cell.
The differentiation of the assessments and activities will keep students more engaged and interested in
the material.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: The teacher will ask the students questions to get the students thinking about the material.
What is the basic unit of life for living things? Why is it important to learn about living things? We are
all living things. Therefore, we are made up of cells that carry out different processes to keep us alive.
The parts of the cell that carry out these processes are called cell organelles. Each organelle has a
function that works together with the other organelles in order to provide life to a living thing.
Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (5 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. After the Introduction, the teacher will distribute the worksheet that goes with the Searching
Through Cells WebQuest. The teacher will instruct the students to go to the different websites
included in the WebQuest to answer the questions. Then, they will make a venn diagram at the
end of the WebQuest to demonstrate their knowledge.
Student Procedures:
1. Students will read over their worksheet that goes along with the Searching Through Cells
WebQuest to get an idea of what they are looking for.
At the Computer (15 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Have students open an Internet browser.
2. Direct students to the Searching Through Cells website.
3. Instruct students to begin their WebQuest.
4. Instruct students to notify the teacher when the student finishes, so that she may assign groups
for the presentation.
Student Procedures:
1. Open an Internet browser.
2. Go to the Searching Through Cells website.
3. Complete the WebQuest, while filling out the worksheet that goes along with the Searching
Through Cells WebQuest.
4. Notify the teacher when the student is finished with the worksheet and WebQuest.
After the Computer (25 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Pick up the Searching Through Cells Worksheet.
2. Place students into groups of 3 to 4 students.
3. Allow the students 5 to 7 minutes to create a two to three-minute video or audio capture through
either Photo Booth or Vocaroo.
4. Instruct students to present their 2 to 3 minute presentations one group at a time.
Student Procedures:
1. While in a group, students will create a two to three-minute presentation about the cell
organelles.
2. Students will present their presentations one group at a time.
Closure: At the end of the lesson, the teacher will ask if the students have any questions about the
lesson, and they will be addressed at this time. The teacher will also note any questions he or she came
across while doing the activities that he or she felt should be shared with the class as a whole. After
these items have been addressed, the students will be dismissed.

For students who did not master the objectives, the teacher will work one-on-one with the student to see
what the problem is.
Students who are ready for enrichment will begin to plan out how they will make their model of the cell.

Searching Through Cells: Lab Report

Good morning, fellow scientists! Today, our task is to look at Dr. Simons cells to find out more
about them, so we can find an antidote for the serum he drank. In this WebQuest, you will visit
many websites to read and watch videos to get to know more about what goes on in cells. Lets
get started!
