ARTS ACTIVITY
Now we are going to do an art project! This is going to be super fun, but I need
everyone to show me full body listening to hear the directions.
I am going to give each person a shape. On this shape I want you to use CRAYONS
(and only crayons!) to draw a picture of how you usually celebrate Thanksgiving.
Give examples from their experiences of what they could draw.
Model along the way - draw an example using the document camera.
But here is the fun part. Do you remember when we made spider webs a couple of
weeks ago? We used a white crayon and then used watercolors to paint over it. We are
going to do the same thing. But, this time you can use whatever color crayons you want.
Model using document camera - draw using example of how you celebrate
Thanksgiving.
It is really important that we only use a little bit of water when painting. If I use a
lot of water then the color wont show as much and youll make a really big
mess.
The kind of art technique we are doing is called wax-resist. Can anyone tell me what the
word resist means?
The wax from the crayon resists the watercolor paint, making the crayon still pop
through.
If we did this with marker the paint would cover it up.
Once you are done with drawing and painting then we will put it on this big poster.
The poster shows all the different and unique ways we celebrate Thanksgiving!
The heart is made out of 4 different shapes. Can you tell me which shapes you
see?
Hexagon
Triangle
Rhombus/Parallelogram/Diamond
Trapezoid
Now when I call your name, I will give you a shape. Please do not be sad about which
shape you get! Each shape is important! Without all of the shapes, we cannot complete
our heart!
Remember you can only use crayons to draw. When you are done drawing, raise your
hand to let me know and I or Mrs. Raj will let you know if you can go paint.
There is only going to be ONE table set for painting. The back white table. You may
only go back there to paint if there is an open seat! Mrs. Raj will be there to help you. If
there are no open seats, you can open your writing journal and start writing a small
moment story about your drawing.
Go over sentence stem on the board for students to reference.
I celebrate Thanksgiving by
When you are done with your art piece, you can open your writing journals to write your
small moment narrative story.
Transition Notes:
Students will raise hands to notify me that they are done with their drawing. If checked
off, I will instruct them to move on to painting (or writing if the painting table is full).
Ask Mrs. Raj to monitor the painting. When students are done, ask students to bring it to
the front of the room to be put on the poster. (If the paper is still wet, we will leave it on a
table to dry.)
Once students are done with painting, they will write about their painting in their journals.
Differentiation/Same-ation:
For students who are English language learners, I will translate the prompt to them in the
language that they are most comfortable.
For students who require more support in writing, I will provide sentence stems for them
to use during the writing activity.
New Vocabulary:

Rhombus/Parallelogram

Trapezoid
Specific Questioning:
