A robot is a machine programmed by a computer but it is not just any machine. The term
comes from a Czech word, robota, meaning "forced labor" It is a special kind of machine which
can move. It follows instructions and the instructions come from a computer. It is a machine, so
it does not make mistakes.

In 1948, William Grey Walter invented robots Elmer and Elsie using very simple
electronics. They were tortoise-like robots. In 1954 George Devol invented the first digital robot
called the Unimate. Later, in 1956, Devol and his partner Joseph Engelberger formed the world's
first robot company.

A robot does not get tired and never complains. Today, robots are all around us and they are
used to make things. Robots are used for jobs which are too dirty, dangerous or dull for
humans. For example, robots can help make cars and some are used to explore dangerous places
like volcanoes. Some robots can clean things and even help vacuum your house. They can also
be used to help answer telephone calls.

In the future, we will have even more robots. They will do things that we cant do or that we
