Although its main facades face north and west, the buling is clear ly wise rom the main square of the neighbourhood ‘tis a buldng formed by the overlapping of wo diferentiatod volumes. The first one, volume of thre heights, occupies the centre of he complex and presents cne facade tha is corugated an without opening. This configura: ton gives the complex a peculiar and easly recognisable image. Una configuracin que le otorga al comple: jo una imagen peculiar y fécimente reconocible. Sin embargo este vo- lumen offece una fachada totalmente diferente en su extrema ‘opuesto. sta es abiertay su orientacién obedece a la intencin de du rminar los espacios interiores aprevechando al maxim la cantdad de luz natural que recibe. El otro volumen ensamblado al primero, es un ‘cuerpo reguar de dos plantas en el que se encuentran las zonas reser vvadas para los consultoros Estas dependencias se situaron en los ex: tremos este y oeste, permitiendo de esta manera un contacto visual directo con el exterior y dejando libre su interior para crear una gran sala de espera que se abre hacia fuera en su extremo suf Entre estos dos volimenes, manteniéndolos separades y visible desde clinterios un gran vestbulo acristalado recorre el edifco desde la ca lie hasta el jardin. Este espacio ofrece a sus vistantes una excelente i rminacién natural asi como el earécter que demandan los ecios pie bcos de este tipo. En las texturas se opté por la austeidad, confando ‘su expresién plea al contraste volumétricoy formal, De este modo, todas las fachadas fueron revocadas a excepcién de la base, que pre senta un chapado en predray de la fachada norte del volumen de tres plantas, en el que se utiizé una pantala curva de chapa metca que cenfatiza la dferenciacicn entre los dos cuerpos y define la estética atrevda de! centro. The volume tothe north, Housing the adinis- trate, research and educatonal actos, eats drectly in bth function ‘and sale tothe hear ofthe Medical Center Campus. The south volume houses the outpatient sevioes, connected directly to the trunk road and en {oyng a favourable southern aspect. maintains a more moderte scale that is adapted tothe patients and vistors who will use the cente everyday. The aium s located between the to volumes and acts as a common connec: ton and a mutiscpinary meeting point forthe main areas ofthe pro- game and its users. is an element hats supposed to organise the fu- |e development and the connection between the east and west sides ofthe campus. Wie many ofthe buildings onthe campus were made of bricks to aocom- ‘modate he connection and to fcitate the expansion, hore the architects were able to detine the development ofthe future east campus. Itroplaces the basic serves provided by four hospitals that were outc-date or not economically viable. The large vol ume ofthe buiging —vith 400 beds for somatic treatment and 180 more for chiatric patenis—is articulated inside a numberof smal elements thea ‘peut retment, our pavilions of roams for patients, and the psychiatry ‘department, which adopts and vais the formal elements ofthe pavilions, ‘This extensive programme is configured ike a smal cy, ‘The aooess tothe hospital rom the north leads tothe main area of crea tin: a hall wo Fors high that extends like a dorsal fn along the buldng ‘This generous space, however, does ot make one fel lost and small, but rather creates a suitable place for daly activities and connects the dflerent {ors and intermediate levels by means of a ramp. From her, the access leads tothe examination and therapy areas and, through elevated linking structures, to he bedrooms andthe psychiatic department For certain spe- cialsed areas, this linear area works as @ whole wth attached medical serv- ices tat olloms a similar model to that of cooperatives. The distinction between the hospital as place for research and treatment and the hoel-tke residential areas for convalescent patents was strongly emphasised in the choie of materials The facades ofthe main area are made of aluminium, hile those othe pavitons ofthe bedrooms and the psyciatre department are made of wood Because ofthe size ofthe project, the disrbution was based on two basic ecisions: to maintain the ineraries between the patents andthe treatment ‘and cae areas as shot as possible, and to encue thatthe crculation was rovided with natural ightng, thus creating an interesting space in which to walk, tet, to relax and to recover. The two layers of the facade —a protec: tive glass layer and he primary stucture— wind around the bling in an interplay of constuction and expansion. Each ofthese parts was given a difer- ont teatment according tts use. The formal mage ha is soon from the srt i that ofa large square tube inserted in a space of double height that generates a porch to alow a non- ‘ronal acess tothe premises, thus creating a certain privacy. At night the porchis closed and the access tothe suger iterally disappears. Cada una de estas partes se traté de manera diferenciada de acuerdo con su vo. En la primera planta el bloque de esterzacisn se convierte en el vo- lumen central de a clinica Se trata de un espacio alrededor del cual se coloca el resto del programa y que muestra abiertamente al publica sus cualidades técricas La cinica propiamente dicha se aduefia del patio prolongando el ni vel_del pavimento y utilzando el espacio de debajo para ubicar todas las instalaciones, Por otro lado, el espacio de trabajo se estructura mediante unos boxes que quedan separados entre ellos por los muebles y por unas mamparas que reproducen la imagen y los colores del disefo corporativo. Because AKH is large building, it has complex internal fcities which were but wih prefabricated elements. Homever, 2s no pretabricated wang mate- ‘ial wast nthe gynaecology unit plaster and wood were used to give tis area more warmth Each of he complex technological faites was designed meticulously, and greater emphasis was given tothe conceptual aspect than tothe new interior
