Backgrounder

Overview: The Tipton Childrens Home offers focused, long-term residential care with an

emphasis on education, community activity and church life. We are a traditional group home in

a rural setting for children 5-18 in need of a safe, nurturing place to live. Tipton kids have access

to licensed counselors, medical services and caring house parents. Our well established

approach to child development has proven to prepare children for adulthood.

History: Our history starts in 1921 in Canadian, Texas, with the decision to take care of four

children after the death of their mother. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Beach showed a great interest in

the children and their hearts went out to them. We were officially founded in 1924 with a

mission to raise children in a loving, caring and stable Christian environment in rural SW

Oklahoma.

Biography: The Director of the Tipton Childrens Home is Joe. B. Waugh. At the age of three, he

moved here with his family. His parents were house parents here at Tipton for 12 years. After

graduating from Cameron University, he would return to serve as cafeteria manager for six

years. In 2003, Joe returned to Tipton Childrens Home as Assistant Executive and Financial
Director, as well as speaking to supporting congregations about the Home. In April of 2014, Joe

would become the Director of Tipton Childrens Home.

Strengths: The bulk of the strengths of the Tipton Childrens Home lie within the many

programs we offer. For example, we offer Long-term Residential Group Care, Counseling,

Afercare Services and 4-H and On-Site FFA Program. We are also licensed by the state but we

do not accept state funding. This means that we can offer these programs year round despite

what happens with revenue from the state.

Weaknesses: The main weakness of the Tipton Childrens Home is our reach. At the time of this

writing, our main campus is located in Tipton, Oklahoma. When compared to Oklahoma DHS,

this puts us at a severe disadvantage. However, having the one campus also allows us greater

control over the program and allows us to make the campus feel more like home as compared

to being just a system.

Communications: The Tipton Childrens Home communicates with the media primarily through

press releases and press kits. Oklahoma City public relations professionals The Golding Group

represents the Tipton Childrens Home in all media matters. For more information about the
