Dear Rutgers Effenaitch Foundation Agent,

The New Brunswick Breastfeeding Alliance (NBBA) has a goal of increasing breastfeeding
information and providing necessary materials to new mothers in the area. The NBBA works with
Certified Lactation Consultants to properly educate new moms about breastfeeding their newborns. In
addition to teaching new moms of New Brunswick about the benefits of breastfeeding, the NBBA would
like to provide the moms with basic breast pumps as an incentive to continue breastfeeding after leaving
the hospital. The New Brunswick Breastfeeding Alliance is requesting a grant in order to help fund a
program which includes: Educating new moms about the benefits of breastfeeding, assistance with
breastfeeding from a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) before leaving the hospital after birth of baby,
and providing pumps for new moms to take home with them. Statistics show that many new moms stop
breastfeeding shortly after returning home from the hospital with the baby. The NBBA wishes to increase
the amount of time a mom breastfeeds for, in addition to increasing overall knowledge on the topic.
Therefore we would like to offer an incentive of free diapers for mothers who continue breastfeeding their
little ones. Our lactation consultants would follow up with clients via home-visits based upon the moms
approval. This provides the mothers the opportunity to voice any concerns or issues with the lactation
consultant and work out the issues. If the mothers are still breastfeeding their baby based on the
home-visit, they will earn free diapers for their persistence. This program would run through the first 12
months of life for the baby, because the first 12 months prove to be the most important time period for a
baby to be breastfed.

Sincerely,
Alexia Ciarfella, Christina Chan, Brielle Cattley, and Melissa Chesek
