TAIJI TEACHING IN THE CHANGE OF ZHOU

ORIGINS AND MEANING OF THE ANCIENT
YIN-YANG SYMBOL
Summary: This paper aims to bring together all the mater ials that reveal the
origins and meanings of ancient Chinese Taiji diagram, in Serbia known as yin
and yang, as well as to explain the rich symbolism of this diagram. The author of
these lines, tries to describe and clar ify the Taiji diagram through several aspects
like: excavated archaeological relics, ancient writ ings in which this diagram appe
ared for the first time, by the interpretat ion of the Book of Change hexagrams
and by displaying of astronomical and cosmological knowledge related to Taiji.
Adding of philosophical comments written by Conf ucius and his disciples, made
the Book of Change become philosophical work called the Change of Zhou. The
Change of Zhou is the first work of ancient China in which Taiji was ment io
ned, and it gives very exiguous explanat ion what the Taiji actually is. Afterwards,
many philosophers of many cent ur ies were trying to figure out the true meaning
of aijis mystery, while the famous lines from the Change of Zhou which say
Book of Changes has Taiji in it, which gave birth to two principles; two princi
ples bore four quadrants which bore eight trigrams became inexhaustible source
of inspirat ion for the development of ontology and philosophical cosmology in Chi
nese thought during the last 2300 years.
