Pre-K Science Center

Pre-K Standards: VI.B.1 Learner observes, investigates, describes and discusses the

characteristics of organisms.; VI.B.2 Learner describes and sequences life cycles of organisms

Vocabulary: order, first, second, next, last

Assessment of the Standards: checklist of student behaviors (see below)

Learning Center

Materials:

-Plant cycle flash cards - Fake Flowers -Flashlight (sun)

-Brown gift filler paper(soil) - Rocks (seeds)

-Watering can -Cups (pots)

Set Up: I will set up the learning center at a table in the classroom. All materials will be laid out

on the table. Students will join me at the table as they rotate through centers.

Learning Event: As the students join me at the learning center, I will ask them if they know

how do plants grow? I will allow students to tell me, and then I will show them the plant cycle

flash cards. One flashcard as soil going into the pot, then seeds, then water, then sunlight, then a

sprout, and finally a plant. I will put the flashcards in the order that the students tell me in, and

we will discuss if the students agree that this is the correct order. I will allow the students to use

the flashcards, and put them in order. For the final activity, I will then ask students to show me

that they can plant a flower themselves by following the plant life cycle. I will allow them 3

minutes to do this. As the students work, I will observe them and record their actions on a check

list. After the 3 minutes are over, I will ask students to tell me what they did first, second, third,

and last.

Anticipated Modifications: If a student cannot remember the plant cycle. I will allow them to

look at the flashcards as they are planting their own flower.

Five questions to ask:

1. Knowledge- How do plants grow?

2. Knowledge- What do plants need to survive?

3. Comprehension- Why did you water the plant?

4. Application- What do you think would happen if a plant didnt get water or sunlight?

5. Application-Why is the flower you planted an example of the plant cycle?
