The most hated woman in America. The title that belonged to the most famous atheist
in the world. This year Netflix released a movie that caught our attention. We spend many hours
researching trial and murder cases on YouTube so when we saw Netflix was coming out with a
movie related to Madalyn Murray Ohair we were stoked. Once we saw what the topic for this
years History Fair was we knew automatically that Madalyn would be our topic. She is the
reason why the most important part of a day for catholics, which is to pray, has been taken away
from schools.
Our research consisted of many internet sources. While researching Madalyn and the
prayer in school case, websites wouldnt have everything that we needed. We went to a variety
of websites in order to find all of the information over the court case. One of our most helpful
sources was the movie, The Most Hated Woman In America. This movie was directed by
Tommy OHaver a non-atheists. He really gave a visual representation of Madalyn's life story all
the way up to her last days alive.
We organized our website by including a backstory to the main conflict. This allows us to
introduce Madalyns personal life because we talk about her children throughout the website. It
was also important to us that we included an outcome of her legacy and how this affects the
present. A variety of sources were used based on our previous knowledge weebly were able to
easily create our website. We named our website The Most Hated Woman in America because
she took much pride in the name.
When we choose our topic we knew not many people knew about it. There were many
sources that talked about her death more than her being the reason prayer was removed from
schools. When we would find a page that talked about the case, it would be a sentence or two
and then it would talk about another topic. Since Madalyns death was more known about then
anything else in her life, when we looked up her name her death was the first thing we would
see. It took hard research to find the right page that consisted of everything that we needed.
Conflict and compromise. It stood out to my partner and I that Madalyn reputation
screamed conflict. Most things in her life weren't solved but one problem was. The court case
that changed the world wasnt an easy case. People worldwide were furious to hear that Madalyn
(along with other people who didnt believe in the bible) were trying to remove morning prayers
from all schools. The conflict began with the chaos around Madalyn and the choice of the judges.
After seeing many upset and angered people it was decided that every school would have a
moment of silence for students and teachers to pray silently to themselves.
