Dear Sir or Madam,
Firstly, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rangga Pratama, | recently graduated
from Bandung Institute of Technology, which in Indonesia is widely known for their Engineering
Majors. | hold a bachelor degree for Geophysical Engineering in Faculty of Mining and
Petroleum Engineering. During my college years, | have grown a passion for earth sciences,
especially in exploring it’s natural resources, such as oil and gas. My goal is to advance the
quality of oil and gas industry in my country.
Studies have shown that Indonesia has a huge potential in terms of natural resources. It has
been stated there are around 60 basins throughout Indonesia, but only 22 of those basins have
been explored and exploited. Indonesia also has a significant sources of geothermal energy,
which resulted from the country’s volcanic geology. The amount of geothermal energy
estimated is at 28.000 megawatts, and currently the world’s third largest geothermal electricity
producer. Besides oil and geothermal. recently it has been stated that Indonesia has shale gas,
resources estimated at 574 TCF (Trillion Cubic Feet). It also stated that Indonesia also has a
huge potential of CBM (Coal Bed Methane) and natural gas, which stand at 453 and 334 TCF,
respectively.
In other words, aside from other potentials, Indonesia has significantly large amount of natural
resources. But there is something that makes me wonder, because, from my point of view, the
production of natural resources in Indonesia is not at it’s fullest potential, even though it has
abundant amount of natural resources. In my opinion, what my country needs is creative and
strong-willed individuals to maximize it’s potential. This is the main reason for me to keep
earning as long as | am able,
| personally decided to study at Manchester University because aside from the fact that
Manchester University is a world renowned university, | believe that the curriculum and
syllabus will allow me to develop my academic and practical skills even further. This is why |
decided to acquire a master’s degree in Petroleum Geoscience for Reservoir Development and
Production in Manchester University. In addition, | also want to study abroad because | think it
has various benefits. | believe that, by studying in a multicultural university like Manchester, |
can expand my knowledge about the world, It will also teach me to adapt to new environment,
and to be independent.
In May 2012, 'm one of the 63 people that took part on a field research conducted by Bandung
Institute of Technology. The research took place in Karang Sambung, Central Java for a duration
of two weeks. We collected an amount of geological data and conducted various geophysical
surveys to obtain an image of the overall geological structure of the region. This experience is.
the moment that fostered my passion in the world of geosciences and showed me the
importance of teamwork in my field of study. | do not hesitate to ask for advices or assistances
from others, and | always willing to listen to other's opinions and ideas, especially in
interpretation.
To sum it up, to fulfill my passion and goal, | believe that The University of Manchester has the
world class facilities and staff to do it. Furthermore, | am certain that the unquestionablequality of the teachings at The University of Manchester will allow me to develop my potentials
to it’s fullest, and finally will allow me to improve the quality of my beloved country, Indonesia.
That is why | am hoping that you consider my application to study for an MSc degree in
Petroleum Geoscience for Reservoir Development and Production
Respectfully Submitted,
Rangga Pratama
