CHAPTER 6

PLANT SAFETY AND LAYOUT

6.1 Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) Analysis

6.1.1 Objectives

This chapter will focus on the identification of hazard that will likely to happen in the
production of octanol. The main objective of this studies are to provide a systematic
way to identify and evaluating the hazards within chemical plant or work environment
that could be a threat to employees and the equipment itself and to ensure the safety
of all of the worker and people around the plant area. It also provides an understanding
of the causes that likely to happen and the consequences of deviations from expected
behaviour of the equipment. When the hazards can be known beforehand, the actions
needed to eliminate or reduce the sources of the risk or hazards can be identified and
ensure all the possible hazards can be continuously monitored.

Hazard and operability analysis is a systematic procedure which can be used to

identify the risk and find the solution to control the hazards thus prevent the accident
from occurring. It is very organized, easy to use and provide more complete
identification of the hazards. This study is very important things that need to be
considered since the chemical plant have a very high possibilities of leakage, fires or
explosions which can bring losses to the company, serious injury and even worst
which is death.
