The Dental Caries Incidence Rate at SMP Satria Makassar in
2017 (Mentored by Syamsu Khaldun and Sarahfin Aslan)

Background: Dental caries in Indonesia is a dental and oral health problems that still
need attention. Basic National Health Research (Riskesdas) in 2007 reported that a score
of decayed, missing, and filled-teeth (DMF-T) in Indonesia still reached 4.85%. Dental
caries is tooth tissue disease that characterized by tissue damage, starting from the tooth

habits affect the caries incident. Old food left in the mouth that not cleaned is associated
with the occurrence of dental caries. Food and school snacks is a problem that needs
public attention, particularly parents, educators and school administrators, because the
food and school snacks is at risk of many biological or chemical contamination that can
disturb dental health. DMF-T index (decayed, missing, filled-teeth) is used in this case to
assess the oral and dental health status.

with the dental caries incidence rate on students at SMP Satria Makassar in 2017.

Materials and Methods: This study is observational analytic using cross

sectional method. The study population are SMP Satria Makassar students. The data
collection method is the DMF-T examination on respondents and by filling in the
questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-Square test.

Results: The results showed theres a relation between brushing habits with the dental
caries incidence rate on students (p = 0.00) and no correlation between snacking patterns
with the dental caries incidence rate on students (p = 0.125)

Conclusion: Theres a relation between brushing habits with the dental caries
incidence rate on students while theres no correlation between snacking patterns with the
dental caries incidence rate on students.
