5.4 The student will investigate and understand that
matter is anything that has mass and takes up space; and
occurs as a solid, liquid, or gas. Key concepts include
a) distinguishing properties of each phase of matter;
b) the effect of temperature on the phases of matter;
c) atoms and elements;
d) molecules and compounds; and
e) mixtures including solutions.
This is an online simulation that allows students to see atoms
and molecules at each state of matter; solid, liquid, and gas. The
simulation also allows students to raise and lower the
temperature and see the effect that it has on the state of matter
that the atoms or molecules are in. Because this class is online
and the activity will not be monitored, I would create a small
quiz that students would take as the follow along in the
simulator. The quiz would have very clear instructions that
students would follow to find the answers. I would ask students
to what atoms and molecules act like at specific temperatures.
This would make sure that students do the simulation and allow
for students to have guided instruction rather than just playing
with the features.
