Learning Objective Scientific Investigation, Reasoning and Logic

The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific

reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and
conducting investigations in which

a) observations are made involving fine discrimination between

similar objects and organisms;
b) precise and approximate measurements are recorded
d) hypotheses are stated in ways that identify the independent
and dependent variables;
e) a method is devised to test the validity of predictions and
inferences;
f) one variable is manipulated over time, using many repeated
trials;
g) data are collected, recorded, analyzed, and reported using
metric measurements and tools;
h) data are analyzed and communicated through graphical

representation;

Online Activity In this activity, the students will be growing three different
simulation plants consisting of a tomato, bean and turnip seed.
They will learn about dependent and independent variables,
how to record data, and complete numerous trials with
manipulated variables.

The students will first form their own hypothesis on what factors
listed below will affect the seeds growth. They will also identify
each dependent and independent variable of each trial they
perform.

There are three possible simulation seeds to plant. There are

also options for compost and fertilizer. The students will choose
whether to give these items to the seeds in different trials. It is

also possible to manipulate the amount of water and light the

plants are getting.
They will try multiple trials for the seeds with different
independent variables to see what effects their growth. The
gizmo also has a bar graph and chart that will show the students
the measurements of the plants, which needs to be recorded
after each trial. There is also a ruler in each pot to visually show
the students the height of the plant.

The students must bring their findings to me, or send them to

me through e-mail. The completed assignment will have their
hypothesis, all the recordings from their trials including the
independent and dependent variables, and their conclusion to
the activity on their outcomes and findings. Each trial must be
correctly labeled to show each different trial.

I will be using the chat feature to communicate with the

students if they have any questions or concerns, a microphone is
not needed but can be used if preferred.
