Andrew Jackson Critique

What do you believe was true in Jacksons speech? What dont you believe?
Andrew Jackson thought that he was in the right, but he made certain assumptions
that just were not correct.

What is Jacksons definition of civilized? of savage?

Jacksons definition of civilized was whether or not a person lived like a Western
European including style of living, religion, and social norms.

Could the Cherokees or Seminoles be classified as a few savage hunters?

If not, why does Jackson use this expression?
Andrew Jackson uses this expression in order to appeal to the audience's emotions in
order to get his point across, and help his argument.

What facts must a listener be ignorant of in order to believe Jacksons

speech?
A listener must be ignorant to the facts of the strife that the Native Americans were
facing as well as a nonlinear progression of life is acceptable. A majority of Western
Europeans and American settlers believed in a linear progression of constant
improvement in lifestyle and were ignorant and unaccepting toward cultures who did
not also possess this belief.

How might enslaved African Americans have reacted to Jacksons speech? In

what ways are they included or excluded?
African Americans were more excluded in this situation because there is little to no
change in their day to day lives with this speech, along with that there is a possibility
that most African Americans could not even hear or read the speech to understand it.

How are enslaved African Americans deeply affected by the policy of Indian
removal?
African Americans werent affected that greatly. It just resulted in more plantations being
built, resulting in more labor for the slaves.

What is progress to Jackson? (key to incorporate the Zinn reading)

To Jackson, progress is the continuous expansion of the Western culture and religion.

Jackson says, Doubtless it will be painful to leave the graves of their fathers,
but what do they do more than our ancestors did or than our children are
now doing? Is this a fair comparison?
Would be a fair comparison if the Native Americans were given the choice to leave
instead of being forced out, without the opportunity to bring everything they wanted.

Andrew Jackson Critique

Why does Jackson believe that the policy of the U.S. government toward the
red man is not only liberal but generous?
Jackson believes this because the alternative is the utter annihilation of the native
groups, therefore he believes he is being more than generous with the decision he
made.

Jackson calls the eastern Indians children of the forest. What does this
description imply about the relationship between whites and indians?

Jackson uses this description of the eastern Indians in an attempt to further the othering stigma
that already surrounds the native population, along with that, attempting to relate them with a
Pagan connotation.
