ROOTS AND WINGS
The Poems of Turgut A. Akter
Once there lived a sufi poet, Jalal al-Din Rumi, in medieval, 13th century in
Anatolia, Turkey. He was the founder of the Mevlevi Dervish order, and he
wrote his poems to the Friend, to the Soul dwelling in divine light within. His
poetry stems from the ecstatic experience of joy and unity, and some might
think its outdated, but even in the 21st century we get the feeling that hes our
contemporary. Turgut A. Akters poems were born of Sufi spirituality, therefore
we should examine some of its characteristics.
The origins of Sufism go back to times preceding 6th century Mohammedan
conquest. Although it stems from Islam, the ascetic orders of Christianity and
that of Buddhism (in some places like Turkestan) exerted major influence on
its development. Sufi fraternities started flourishing in the 8th century, and as
a result of the techings and their charismatic representatives, several thousand
mystical communities sprang up in Islamic countries. These orders emphasized
different aspects of the mystical life, but they were identical in their experience
of Gods unity. Likewise, the Hasidic groups of Judaism were formed in a decentra-
lized manner, organized from below, so to say, and having a basically tolerant
attitude towards one another.
Mystical groups in Islam were also related to other Eastern schools, partic-
ularly to Kabalistic ones, by adopting the practice of using Gods sacred names
as mantras. This is the method of the Mevlevi Dervishes as well, besides the
well-known mystical dance in which the dervish spins around his own axis with
outstretched arms.
There are many similarities between the mystic schools of the same or dif-
ferent religions. The role of sacred languages, such as Sanskrit, Hebrew or
Arabic, has been indispensible since ancient times. Greek and Latin, of course,
also belong to this group. The Greek Orthodox Church has retained the language
of liturgy and the mantra-like use of certain expressions, but as in Western
Christianity, which fell under the influence of Latin as sacred language, we find
a sharp division between the esoteric and the exoteric schools. The liturgical
use of national languages became dominant with the advent of Protestantism,
and modern languages are not always suitable for expressing ancient, spiritual
truths in their complexity.
Meditation, mantras and mystic communities are Eastern modes of expres-
sion, whose terminology and techniques were discovered by Westerners only in
the last few decades. Turgut A. Akter has written his English poems for them,
for us, who have not inherited an unbroken chain of tradition from our ancestors,
but who desire to find out about ourselves, because our modern culture and
science, and with them our everyday lives seem to miss the point.
What would some expressions spoken in foreign languages say to the indi-
vidual whose world view is based on rationalism? Or could a photo album,
showing the sacred sites of different religions initiate us in the mysteries?

Probably not, and the same is true about the philosophy of Descartes, Hegel or
Bertrand Russell, not to mention the Wiener Circle, whose thinkers believed
that metaphysics cannot be understood with the methods of symbolic logic, so
the subject by no means is worth considering.
Fortunately, even the greatest thinkers were able to realize the power of
poetry. A poem can point beyond itself, and originating in the oral tradition of
humankind, its able to express universal truths. Let me add, not always. There
is a difference between objective and subjective art. According to G.I. Gurdjieff,
a work of art may be called objective in case it produces completely the same
effect on the audience.
While translating Turgut A. Akters poems into Hungarian, I felt that Im
dealing with the work of an exceptional artist. He was born in Turkey, immi-
grated to the United States, and over the last seventeen years has spent most
of his time in Canada. Hes a renaissance man, a well-known theatrical expert
and stage-director, a bilingual writer in English and Turkish, translator and
sculptor. When meeting him in person I realized that hes not only an artist, but
a spiritual teacher as well. The greatness of the poet manifests itself in the unity
of the authors personality.
The poems are testimonies. We immediately experience their unique rhythm
once we read them out loud, as they flow with minor changes in every line or
stanza. Certain rhythmic patterns emerge, we would think theyre disconnected,
but later we find out, theres a kind of repetition providing a loose structure for
improvisation. Rhyming follows freely, with a light touch at the end of dense
lines and sentences often without the verb to be. We might call this quasi-inten-
tional word-permutation thought-rhyming. This way of writing is not far from
the methods of surrealism, but here, instead of finding ad hoc word combinations,
we read om aum amen amin hu.
The contents unity and continuity is shown in the layout and the lack of
cyclical composition. The reason is that the poems were written in spiritual
time, so their actual chronology is secondary. By reading we connect with this,
and become part of the creative process, we continue or even rewrite the poems
by our very presence.
As I mentioned, these poems address the Friend living in us. And if we listen
we can hear His word. If everything we lived through so far we give up as an
offering to Him, then we might find the humbleness necessary for the putting
of experience into perspective. The poetry of Turgut A. Akter teaches and makes
us repeat this gesture. Probably this is the best our fellow-human can do for us.
As I was translating I did not forget, that Hungarian as a sacred language
is not in use today. We dont use some expressions about God as we did a few
hundred years ago, because our vocabulary has considerably changed as a side-
effect of certain historic dictatorships, unlike in most Anglo-Saxon countries
where the language was spared from forced changes in the meaning of words.
My aspiration was to reproduce rhythm and rhyme as in the original, or to
find the best substitutes if possible. The poems of this book together form an
epic work formed from lyrical pieces. I believe this is true about Turgut A.

brmely malkots csak abban az esetben nevezhet objektv mvszetnek, ha

Trekedtem arra, hogy a ritmusokat s a rmeket, ahol csak lehet, a magyar

Afterword
Relying on his experience in the theatre and the field of Sufism, Turgut A. Akter invites
the reader of his poems to participate on a journey through the turbulent mystical fields
of the mind. The urgent desire to express the intensity in life of pain, fear, love and passion
alongside the hunger for absolute meaning and the journey he has been undertaking "on
the road" in the mystical world probably stimulated the poet to write this collection of
poems.
His intriguing imagination invents images and events simulating the dream-work in
those endless, wretched dreams almost everyone is familiar with, in which the dreamer
futilely searches for a place, person or even a thing that he has forgotten, does not know
and never finds. As the dream fades away imperceptibly, the dreamer awakens with a
start.
Images and events change radically and suddenly, responding to the impulse of pain,
"Hobbesian" fear, conflict and metamorphosis. Changes in images and events seem to
descend from above, rise from beneath or emerge from inside. Images and apparitions
confronting the turbulence of dream-work, are intensified and use feelings and emotions
for decision-making. No slave in the mystical field of the mind toils under a master logic.
The simulation of dream-work declines as the poet turns to the subject of identity,
confronting the enigma that killed Narcissus: Who am I? Who are you? Who are we?
The scope of inquiry is limited to the psychology of the self and of the self-other rela-
tionship.
The poet seems to believe in a dual mind comprised of a feminine and a masculine
component. In one poem he conjectures that the duality may be at the heart of the pri-
mordial conflict endemic to the species. Against the background of a life lived in soli-
tude and pain, mostly in sadness with pangs of joy and exaltations of happiness, the poet
strongly favours the union of the feminine and the masculine in one.
The poet's cultural aesthetic is centuries old Turkish mystical Sufism but tinged by
full awareness of Western reserves of meaning in control of thought and language and
sublimation of emotion. His quiet soul and turbulent mind deploy in the poems an
impressive fortitude to withstand the trials of fate. He betrays no sign of anger, aggression
nor any desire for a vendetta against self, other, society or culture. Solitude and sadness,
even despondency, pervade his being as an undercurrent with joy and happiness forming
occasional surface waves. Hope and desire diminish with age.
Close to the end of the book, the poet broods over the final cure that death will
bring. It is an "I surrender" poem but with dignity and with a mind still seeking an
absolute resolution of the human condition. In the final poem, he offers a plea for union:
a mantra with om for the contemplation of ultimate reality. The moral strength displayed
is inspiring.
Possessing redemption with a touch of salvation in the sense of a discourse and an
intellectual understanding, the poet belongs to a branch of Sufism that holds infinite
hope for the future.
In these tormented times, Turgut A. Akter shares with the reader a timeless relevant
way of mystical wisdom and of being. It is a crystal clear illuminated challenging voice
that should not only be heard but also be listened to and pondered.
