Portfolio Project 10 Lesson Plan
Creation of Landforms
Third Grade
This lesson will start out as a whole group before breaking into smaller groups of 2.
(4) Subject:
(5) Standard:
E5C Students understand that features on the Earths surface are constantly changed by a
combination of slow and rapid processes.
(6) Objective:
The student will be able to explain how landforms are created and if it is a slow or rapid process.
Each group will do a presentation of a different landform and explain how it was created, the distinct
characteristics that give it the classification and if it would be a slow or rapid process.
(8) Procedures:
The movie will be played to show the students all of the different landforms and how they are
created. After the movie a short presentation will be made using the tub of sand and the fan to show how
sand dunes by wind blowing the sand. The kids can take turns using the fan to move the sand and show
the change of the terrain. The students will then be separated into groups of two and assigned a landform
to research. The landforms to be assigned are mountain, volcano, river, lake, canyon, valley, plateau, and
island.
The groups will use the computer to do research on how each landform is created and write a
short report to be presented to the class. They will also build a model out of clay to use as a visual while
reporting how each landform is made and show the characteristics of each landform. The groups will then
present their findings to the class.
(9) Assessment:
The students will be assessed on their team work, research, model, and presentation.
Team work: Did the group work well together and share responsibilities?
Presentation: Was the presentation clear, and able to be heard by the entire class?
