0. INTRODUCTION

Work in pairs. Look at this physical map of Spain or use Google Maps to find
Carmona.

1. REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EARTH

Pencils in the centre. Put your pencil cases in the centre of the group table and
classify these advantages and disadvantages of globes and maps. After 3 minutes,
write your answers in your notebook.

Play in pairs. Read cooperatively and play.


Parallels and meridians are imaginary lines. Parallels circle the Earth and they are
lines of latitude. They are parallel to the Equator (parallel 0).
Meridians are the lines of longitude that go from pole to pole. The Greenwich
Meridian (or Prime Meridian) is the 0 meridian.
Parallels go from 0 to the North and South Poles and meridians go from 0 to the
West and East.

Find the coordinates for these points:

Numbered heads together. Listen and do. Use a physical world map.

- You are going skateboarding towards latitude 40 N & longitude 0.
- You are swimming to latitude 40 N & longitude 140 E.
- You are riding a horse to latitude 20 N & longitude 100 W.
- You are playing tennis and your ball is flying to latitude 60 N & longitude 60 E.
- You are doing gymnastics and you are touching latitude 0 & longitude 80 W.

2. PHYSICAL WORLD MAP

Scrabble. Read and use the words from the box to play scrabble in pairs.

Rotatory sheet technique. Use your brain and memorize all the landforms in two
minutes. Then, use the rotatory sheet technique to complete this table.

Individual activity. Use flaps to label the blank physical world map (annex I) with the
landforms you know.

Work in groups. Make up a song about the oceans in 3 minutes. Use your body to
play music and point to the oceans.

Thinking twins. In pairs, look at the map and say where these rivers flow to. First,
you tell your partner; later, your partner agrees/disagrees and finally you write.

3. POLITICAL WORLD MAP

Numbered heads together. Think in group. What continent do these countries


belong to?

Play in pairs. Use flaps to label the blank political world map (annex II) with these
countries. Later, play a guessing game.

4. THE RELIEF OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA

1-2-group technique. Read about these landforms and try to label the physical map
of the Iberian Peninsula (annex III).
The Inner Plateau (Meseta Central): It is in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
Central Mountain Chain (Sistema Central): These mountains are about 2,000
metres high. They divide the Inner Plateau in 2: Northern Sub-plateau and
Southern Sub-plateau.
Mountains of Toledo: They are low mountains below the Central Mountain
Chain (Sistema Central).
Mountains of Len: They are about 2,000 metres high and separate Galicia from
Castilla y Len.
Cordillera Cantbrica: Its in the north and separates Castilla y Len from
Asturias and Cantabria. Picos de Europa are here.
Iberian Chain (Sistema Ibrico): Its in the east. It separates the Inner Plateau
from the Ebro Depression.
Sierra Morena: Its in the south. It separates the Inner Plateau from Andaluca.

Answer these questions and represent these peaks


on a map.
- Whats the highest peak in the Iberian
Peninsula?
- And whats the highest peak of Spain?

landforms from the previous activity in five
minutes. Later, your teacher will ask you to point
to them on a map.

Add these mountain chains.


Galician Massif (Macizo Galaico): Its formed by low mountains with rounded
peaks.
Basque Mountains (Montes Vascos): Its formed by low mountains with pointed
peaks.
Pyrenees (Pirineos): They are very high and form the border between Spain and
France.
Catalan Coastal Chain (Sistema Costero-Cataln): Its parallel to the
Mediterranean coast.
Betic Chain (Sistemas Bticos): Its formed by two chains, the Pennibetic Chain
and the Subbetic Chain.

Add these depressions (plain crossed by rivers and surrounded by mountains).
