Excerpt from Essay one

Just like heterodiegetic narration writing the story as multi-focal really allows the reader

to get a full grasp on everyones viewpoints in the story. Throughout the story the reader is able

to understand just how miserable Johnny is through the way he talks and acts. When Johnny

falls ill he starts to realize how tired he has become from working all the time. He then decides

on his own that he is done going to work and providing for the entire family. When he breaks

this to his mother they have very different reactions to his decision. Johnny says in what the

narrator calls a sweet voice, I aint never goin to work again. After saying that to his mother

she replies with, My God, Johnny! Dont say that. Johnny is happy to be leaving because he

knows he can finally rest after working for his entire, but short life. His mother on the other

hand is terrified that he is leaving because she knows that without Johnny it will be near

impossible for her to make ends meet. By seeing this situation from both characters

perspectives it allows us to see how the decision for Johnny to leave affects the main two

characters in this story.
