MODELLING OF BULLET RESISTANT GLASS

Bullet proof is a device produced by blending together different pieces of components by

mechanical method to promote a high tensile strength material which is capable of blocking the
passage of fast moving objects through its body surface. It is usually made from a combination
of two or more types of glass, one hard and one soft. The softer layer makes the glass more
elastic, so it can flex instead of shatter. Another construction method, which is becoming popular
rapidly, is the use of security laminates as a film on the inner surface of ordinary glass. This,
when bonded with the application of a pressure sensitive adhesive and cured fully, also provides
a protection similar to the multi-layered bullet-resistant glass. The optical clarity is much better
and tint-free, thickness and weight are reduced as much as 5070%.

AIM

The ability of bullet-resistant glass to stop a bullet is determined by the thickness of the glass. A
rifle bullet will collide with the glass with a lot more force than a bullet from a handgun, so a
thicker piece of bullet-resistant glass would be needed to stop a rifle bullet as opposed to a
handgun bullet.

In this thesis, we will model a bullet resistant glass made up of a laminate of glass sheets bonded
together with polyvinyl butyral (PVB). We will attempt to determine the bullet resistant glass
composite thickness that will be required to stop bullets from different guns from passing
through the glass, and hence, find a relationship between the impact force of the bullet on the
glass (muzzle energy of the gun) and the composite thickness.
