Ethics Essay
Most of the knowledge we gain in college is technical knowledge directly related to our
major. This includes subjects such as math and physics, and more specialized subjects such as
networks and computer security. Although these subjects are of course very important, it is
equally important to understand the importance of applying that technical knowledge in positive
ways. This is where ethics come into the curriculum.
Understanding ethics is important because although engineering students come out of
college with a lot of important knowledge, if they are unable to use that knowledge wisely it
loses all meaning. Having a code of ethics such as the IEEE Code is important because it can be
used as a checklist to confirm that engineers are following the best practices. When approaching
a difficult situation, I believe that the most important thing is to be able to consider everyones
best interest. This includes the best interest of the consumer, the producer, and the designers.
Overall, ethics are an important topic for engineers to understand and respect. Without
ethics, engineers can easily take advantage of consumers by exploiting their lesser knowledge of
certain technical topics. It is important that we live in a world where consumers of all experience
and knowledge levels are able to trust those who create products for them.
