My teacher work sample was about community and maps.

I had two goals for my students: that

they learn more about their community, and learn basic information about maps and why they are

important. I designed three lessons based upon my goals and pre-assessment results, and then

conducted an analysis based upon my data from the rubrics I designed for my post-assessment. Prior to

my lessons I found that most students had a basic knowledge of maps and their community. They were

able to draw their homes and surrounding neighborhood including streets, houses, and other buildings

or landmarks. I taught one lesson that explored their home through a flipbook they made that went

from their individual homes, then their city, state, country, continent, and planet. My second lesson had

to do with basic parts of a map such as the title and key and why they are important. In my final lesson,

we went on a virtual treasure hunt using a map on the SMART Board and the cardinal directions. I had a

lot of participation from my students throughout this mini unit and from my analysis there was a

positive learning growth indicating that most students reached the goals.
