nesting. Topping my baby-prep list, however, wasnt
a bassinet or a haul of diapersthough indeed I
needed bothbut an antique sideboard. Or a Victorian
breakfront. A midcentury credenza? What I needed was a
big, beautiful storage piece for my dining room.
Allow me to explain. Like most New Yorkers, I live in an
apartment. And though the rooms are gracious and the
natural light ample, the kitchen is a galley. Who cares about
cabinet space? I reasoned when we moved in. I certainly
dont need room to store snacks I certainly shouldnt be eat-
ing. There was just enough space for what I consider kitchen
essentials, from vintage demitasse spoons to Bundt pans
to artisan-made coee mugs.
I panicked when I found out we were having another boy.
Suddenly I was haunted by visions of gangly teens, one
drinking milk from the cartonfridge door ajarthe other
riing through the single cabinet of dry goods in search of
somethinganything!to eat. Ive heard the stories from
teen-boy parents: the grocery lists, the grocery bills, the
constant, insatiable appetites. But with deep troves of cus-
tard cups, cocktail stirrers, and bamboo steamers dragged
home from China, I had built a kitchen for the Galloping
Gourmet, not the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In my pregnant psychosis, I became obsessed with freeing
up space in the kitchen for Doritosor at least baby bottles.
An elegant solution, I gured, would be to purchase a large
storage piece for the dining room, ideally an antique with
some gravitas to counteract the Ikea dining table. I found my
saving grace not at a New England antiques mall (always

key; inside itlots of tapers. My new love, a Federal-era sideboard made with book-
matched ame mahogany, hails from Mary Kays Furniture
near Baltimore. Thanks, Mary Kay! In it live the daily
essentials: linen napkins, taper candles, and matches, plus
formal chargers, ne silver, and monster-size platters
the kind of platters on which I imagine Teddy and Whit will
someday make after-school nachos. In the meantime, the
working locks and key will keep them both away from the
whisper-thin Lobmeyr coupes. And those matches.
Shopping cant solve all of our woes, of course, but this one
time, it did. Im head over heels for the sideboard. And baby
Whitakers pretty handsome, too.

A
Ashley Whittakers transformation
of an 1823 Hudson Valley home for
a family with three young children
began by embracing the quirks of
yesteryear. The rambling Federal-
style residence, enlarged in the
1830s and 1950s and overhauled
by the previous owner, was beau-
tiful. Nevertheless, she notes, it
was a meandering warren of
pass-throughs and low-ceilinged
rooms. Looking to classic English
manors for inspiration, she mar-
ried adventurous color and
graphic prints with a laid-back
attitude toward art and antiques.
Its a rural farmhouse, she says.
You cant do precious. Here, the
designer explains how she recon-
ciled past and present in creating
rooms that are at once comfort-
able and elegant.

1. Double-parlor living rooms

were commonplace in the 19th century.
Theyre big, so here I carved out
distinct zones: a formal side for grown-
ups, and a relaxed area for kids.

2. Everything dominoed from the

aubergine-lacquered walls. Gutsy
but this bright room can handle it.
When the clients didnt push back,
I kept checking: Are you sure?
But they love it.

3. The tufted chaise is the kids favor-

ite hangout spot. They read, nap,
and even jump on it. I love that. This
is a real home, not a showpiece.

Rebecca Vizard transforms
her rural Louisiana estate with
funky French Quarter f lair.

PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL COSTELLO PRODUCER DORET TA SPERDUTO

Y Youre less than a mile from the
Mississippi River, but this feels
like the south of France. What is
this magical place?
REBECCA VIZ ARD: Originally this was part
of Locustland Plantation, a property on
Lake Bruin just outside of St. Joseph,
Louisiana, my hometown. My grand-
father bought it in the 1950s. My husband
and I moved here in the late 80s from
New Orleans, when my father asked him
to help r un the family business. I
thought my life was over! My bottom lip
shook for four years. But the isolation
made me successful: I was so desperate
to get something going that I took a big
leap with my pillow business.
M.K. QUINL AN: How did you get the idea to
launch it?
Before I started B. Viz Design, I was an
interior designer. Custom pillows were
costly, and I thought they should be
really special. I created my rst pillow
out of antique textiles for a design job in
New York. I was living in New Orleans
when I started a business crafting one-
of-a-kind pillows. My book, Once Upon a
Pillow, tells that story.
This house looks older than its 30 years.
When we built it, I told my architect that
I wanted a New Orleansstyle farm-
house, lake house, and hunting lodge, all
in one. We repurposed some pieces from
my grandfathers original hunting cabin,
and from my aunt we got vintage doors,
sinks, and tubs. The living rooms cypress
walls are painted with an ocher glaze for
a soft, aged look. The green breezeway
connects the house to my studio; its the
main entrance, but it doubles as a ower-
arranging room. The vine on the ceiling
crept in several years ago, and I decided
to leave it even after my gardener mistak-
enly killed it! It is beautifulwhy not?
How much of the decorating was a product
of happenstance?
Wide cypress boards in the living room were

a beer-de-lier. But I actually drink more
wine than beer, which is how I came up
with the living rooms cork-de-lier. I
now hire local kids to string the corks
and bottle caps. We sell quite a few.
The bathrooms entrance through a book-
case reminds me of The Lion, the Witch,
and the Wardrobe.
Its my favorite thing in the house! I got
the idea from an apartment I visited
in Paris. I asked to use the restroom,
trying out my French, and my friend
pointed to an armoire. I thought, Hmm,
maybe I said that wrong? Sure enough,
inside was a little toilet and sink. I did
the same in my home: I had a door made
and tted onto an antique bookcase.
Do you have a thing for slipcovers?
Ive always bought furniture when I love
its lines; then I change things up with
slipcovers. Its great to be able to wash
them, since they get a lot of wear and
tear. We often have guests, and they
often bring their dogs. Our house is not
fancy or perfect, but we have a lot of fun.
Speaking of fun, what is the story with that
basket full of hats by the replace?
We keep the hats there for spontaneous
entertainment. Well have cocktails in
the afternoon, and, without fail, by the
second or third drink, someone peeps
around the corner with a hat on. Before
you know it, its a hat party.
You clearly love art.
Im drawn to pieces that move me or tell
a story. My home has paintings by my
sister-in-law Beth Lambert, ea-market
finds, and pieces that Ive purchased
from my gallerist friend Ann Connelly. I
also collect textiles, like the guest bed-
rooms chain-stitched suzani. Its a
Kazakh Tus-Kiiz from the early 20th
century that was too rare to cut. These
pieces were often given to newlyweds to
hang in their homes.
Despite your initial misgivings, life in
Locustland appears to agree with you.
The irony of my story is that, while I
resisted moving here 30 years ago, now
theres no place Id rather be. I garner a
lot of creativity from this place. When I
get stumped on a pillow design, I go out-
side and garden for a few minutes, and
soon I come back inside with a better
idea. I nd it cathartic to be here with-
out too many distractions. After a day of
designing pillows, I feel like I dont have
a problem in the world.

1. The moment you enter the front door,

you can see a row of closets in the din-

draw you in, I designed a mural
inspired by Henri Rousseau. The artist

might have art hanging on a deep plum

curtains to cutlery. He responded
with a f lexible, multitasking
scheme that works equally well
when the couple are on their own
as when their kids, one of whom is
in college, are in residence. What
follows is the designers advice for
crafting rooms that, while tailored
and dressy, feel easy and relaxed.

1. The upholstered walls in the

dining room are the color of tomato
bisque. The orangey-red wool satin
absorbs the clamor of boisterous
dinners and provides a beautiful back-
ground for art, day or night.
7

2. Formal but not intimidating

was the goal. I designed a parchment-
covered dining table that works for two
but leafs out for larger groups. The
patterned rug hides a multitude of sins.

3. Nothing atters like candlelight.

The chandelier holds real candles
which I encourage my clients to use
but is also wired with tiny electric
bulbs for additional light.

4. For two people or 20, the living

room is relaxed and inviting. There is
seating near the windows for
entertaining and a corner banquette
for reading and watching TV.
The two zones are distinct but still
relate to each other.

and weaknessesasked designer

Frank de Biasi to renovate it into
an elegant yet family-friendly
home. De Biasi mixed pieces com-
missioned by artisans with sleek
upholstery and contemporary art
to create rooms that feel both of
the moment and warmly per-
sonal. Throughout, there are nods
to the wifes native South Africa
and her love of pink. You cant
pigeonhole it to a particular style,
and thats good, says de Biasi. I
want people to enter and think,
This is so her. He shares his tips
on fashioning rened, livable inte-
riors f illed with unique and
made-to-order touches.

1. I was adamant about

adding some vertical interest to the
living room to balance all of its
low furniture, so I commissioned a pair
of tall straw-marquetry screens
from Lison de Caunes in Paris to go at
one end of the room. The straw is soft
on the eyes, and each strand has a
slightly dierent color and luster. Plus,
because its a fragile material that
can be dicult to work with, you dont
see it everywhere.

2. For the living room windows, we

designed these gorgeous shutters that
fold in on themselves to be
ush with the walls. Curtains on that
many windows would have made it
look like a theater stage.

3. The apartments thick walls and

solid prewar construction allowed us to
build in storage under the stairs
for the two young sons sporting
equipment. I also installed a recessed
china cabinet in the dining room and
3
inset bookcases in the master bedroom.

installed storage for
bikes and skateboards.

In the library, a custom Gene Meyer rug
with a bold tribal motif takes center
stage. Both the sofa and its chenille fab-
ric were made to order for the project.
The curtains are in a custom silk that was
handwoven by Soie de Lune.
8

Gracie wallpaper hand-painted with branches

and owers creates the feel of a garden in the
dining room. The custom table has a cran-
berry crackled-resin top. Chairs are backed in
a Chelsea Textiles silk plaid. Curtains are silk
taeta with pleated trim. OPPOSITE, CLOCK-
WISE FROM TOP LEF T: Frank de Biasi. A cabi-
net built into the wall holds a collection of
pink Herend china. A Marcel Wanders mirror
reects the rooms windows.
4. Its all about hard and soft.
I added goat-hair pillows to the Lucite
chairs, commissioned a glass coee
table lled with down and feathers, and
placed metallic cylinder side tables
next to the velvet sofa. I like the
conversation those dierent elements
have with one another.

5. Rugs with an overall or oset pattern

oer greater versatility. Its more
modern to have something thats a
little off, and the chairs can go
anywherewhereas it can be limiting
if the furniture always has to be
arranged around a central theme. When
my partner, Gene Meyer, designed the
living rooms silk rug, he was inspired
by a game of pick-up sticks.

6. The more light, the better, but I

prefer beautiful lamps and sconces
to down-spot lights. Swing-arm sconces
on either side of the library
sofa give o a softer glow, and theyre
also handy for reading. In the
living room, the Shizue Imai lamp has
a base that looks like bubblesits
like a piece of art.

7. The library serves as the husbands

man cavehence the enormous TV.
The wife also wanted to reference her
South African roots here, so we
collected African art and covered
throw pillows with vintage Kuba
cloth. The bold graphics of the rug
resemble tribal motifs without looking
clichd. Meanwhile, the stitched
goat leather on the walls creates an
old-fashioned library look.

8. When I was looking for a trim

to nish o the edges of the silk taeta
curtains in the dining room, I
found some old saris in an import store
on New Yorks Second Avenue.
I love using antique fabrics whenever
possible. Here, the pattern of the
sari fabric became a pleated trim
its a very fun, custom look.

9. We recycled the dining

rooms existing Gracie wallpaper by
cutting it up and decoupaging its
flowers and butterflies onto the
geometric silver-leaf Gracie paper on
the powder rooms walls (next page).

119

room, cutouts of vintage Gracie wallpaper were decou-
paged over silver-leaf paper, also by Gracie. Everybody has
9 stu they dont want to see, says de Biasi. These cabinets
over the closets store luggage, hats, and seasonal items.
