Keister Music Night Assignment

Grade level: 1
Anchor standard: 8; Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work

Brainstorming:
-Incorporate technology?
-What do 1st graders like?
- Disney? Cartoons? Animals?
-Paint/draw what/how the music makes you feel?
-Make your own instruments?

Title Of Project: TBD

Whats gonna happen?:

1. Create a playlist of songs for the student and parent(s) to listen to
a. classical music (short pieces, band songs?)
b. pop music
i. Kid friendly- Shawn Mendes? What Do I Know?-Ed Sheeran, One
Direction? Old School Taylor Swift?
c. kid songs (Disney songs, lullabies?)
i. Moana? Frozen?
d. original composition?
2. Gather paper, crayons, markers, and paint
3. Ask them how/what the piece makes them feel/what it means to them
a. Maybe rephrase this to What do you think theyre trying to say? both work, but if
were interpreting, it might be better to ask the artists intent (what they wanted to
happen/ make people feel) rather than result (how it actually made people feel)
4. Keep going until the 15 minutes is up (let both students and parent(s) draw, dont rush
them) [keep a timer with on hand]
5. Ask if theyd like to keep their pictures or display them for new participants to see? (be
near an empty wall and see if you can tape the pictures to the wall to display?) (maybe
draw some pictures in advance to hang in case nobody wants to give theirs, but so
interest can still be attracted)

Why did I pick this?:

1. There is no right or wrong answer in this activity
2. Expose student and parent(s) to new music they may take interest with?
3. Allows originality and creativity roam freely with no barriers
4. Can be as expressive, abstract, or minimalist as wanted by the artist
5. Forces participants to listen to the music and gain some sort of idea of emotion from the
music, and then makes the participant express it in picture form
6. Doesnt really involve any technology on the participants side (only requires a
phone/tablet and a speaker (split headphone jack?) on my end), which may be a needed
change of pace depending on what/how much technology other groups used, if any
7. No rush, could spend whole 15 minutes on one song, or end up going through 10 songs,
depending on the participant(s)
8. Even if a student doesnt want to draw or physically cant, the parent(s) could ask what
the student wants drawn, or if they are alone, I can ask and draw it for them
9. Could be multiple students at a time participating, or just one at a time, and I cant think
of any problems that arise other than the fact that one student may feel like they are
being rushed
10. Incorporates both drawing and music, and asks the participant to Interpret intent and
meaning in artistic work
