Besides E.

canis infections, which involve predominantly mononuclear cells, there are reports
of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in dogs in Europe (2, 6, 14). The disease is thought to be caused
by E. equi and is usually mild or has a subclinical course.

Because the symptoms were not very specific, a diagnosis of granulocytic ehrlichiosis was
made only after identification of Ehrlichia organisms in neutrophils.

DNA sequencing. The DNA isolates of both dogs were compared to those of a cow infected
with E. phagocytophila and a horse infected with E. equi.
