Valce operating mechanism

- Valve open and closed at properly time, and stay o[en required length of time
- Timing of valves is controlled by valve operating mechanism as the valve timing
- The valve lift (distance the valveis lifted off its seat)
- The valve duration (length of time the valve is held open)
- Both are determined by shape of cam lobes
- Cam ramps/step > partion of the lobe that gently stars the valve operating mechanism
Is machined on each side of the cam lobe to permit the rocker arm to be
eased into contact with valve tip

Cam ring

- A circular piece of steel with a series of a cam or lobes on the outer surface, mounted
concentrically and driven by the crankshaft.
- Used may have four of five lobes on both Intake and exhaust track
- Four lobescam may be used on seven or none cylinder
- Timing of the valves events determined by the spacing of the lobes
