My Ma and Bapuji

Be the change that you wish to see in the world. MAHATMA

GANDHI

The above quote from Mahatma Gandhi fits well to my parents life
story. They were born to stand out. Throughout the life they did not try to fit
in the existing social structure. They started their young life following the

dream of Indian Independence and made huge sacrifices for the cause

along with many followers of Mahatma Gandhi.

My earliest memory of my Bapuji is when we went to visit him in

prison (where he was a political prisoner, probably in Akola). During my

childhood Ma was totally responsible for our care as Bapuji spent lot of time

and energy in Indias Independence movement. She fulfilled this

responsibility extremely well with little support from the extended family. My

fathers life story impressed on me the importance of principles in life.

Throughout his life, he made several sacrifices because he refused to

compromise with his principles. Few examples of these are: - Giving up

medical education, following Gandhian movement which involved financial,

physical and emotional sacrifices. He did not believe in corruption and

bribery which is the hallmark of success for many politicians after

independence. In my opinion, he should have achieved higher political
position based on his education, leadership qualities and sacrifices for his
country. I am proud that he stuck to his principles of not participating in
corruption, bribery and backdoor deals. My parents strongly believed in

education and encouraged us to pursue the field of our choice.

My mother has had strong affinity to read throughout her life. She

read everything she could lay her hands on. This helped her to self-educate

in many areas. She pursued her education by studying and passing several
Hindi literature exams. She also encouraged me and my siblings to pursue
organized Hindi education while continuing our education in Marathi

medium. I am sure this book will give details of her leadership and social
activities. Most impressive of her quality was her extreme devotion to her
family. My father suffered from asthma most of his life. In later part of his
life for many years he required constant help and attention due to poor

health. I recall, my mother stayed by his side without complaining.

I suffered from asthma and various illnesses throughout my

childhood. My parents took me to various specialists with the hope of
helping me. My mother always knew when I was not feeling well. They

continued to encourage me to pursue education. Fortunately I got over

asthma after the age of 17 yr. Because of this and strong support from my
parents, I was able to pursue highest level of medical education in India
and abroad. When I got married without consulting my parents, they

welcomed my wife in the family. My parents had strong influence in us
making independent decisions as long as we were on reasonable track.
When I went to America for further studies my mother kept in touch with us
by writing letters regularly. In those days it was impossible to communicate

with telephone. My parents did not like my decision to live in America on

permanent basis. This did not stop them from loving me. They always look
forward to our visits to Khamgaon. They expressed their pride in my

achievement.

In short, how did my parents influence my life? I pursued the highest

level of education in my field in spite of chronic illnesses and ill health

during childhood. I learned to think independently. I was able to adapt and

live in a foreign country in terrible weather conditions and with little money
in early part of my life. I taught and practiced in Medical college hospital
and took care of poor patients, instead of going into lucrative private

practice. I accepted and fulfilled various leadership responsibilities in my

hospital. Until I came to America, I was using Khadi which influenced me to

buy locally made products whenever possible. Over a period of several

years many Indian families moved to Toledo. Indian community leaders

realized a need for a place to conduct social and religious activities. I, along
with my wife Leena, helped in the development of Hindu temple and

Heritage Hall in Toledo as founding members. I participated in the political

process in America indirectly by giving donations and canvassing for

Democratic Party candidates.

Thus, I have always been proud of my parents and

thankful for their strong influence on my life.
