Equality in Education

Women. 50% of the worlds population, yet not treated as equals. Women all
over the world are being put down because of their gender in things like
politics, sports and education. For my essay however I will focus on education.

According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Everyone has the

right to education. Education shall be directed to the full development of the
human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and
fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship
among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of
the United Nations for the maintenance of peace. It did not say a man should
only receive an education, it said everyone, and that includes women.

Education is one of the most important things in life. Whether its about
business, agriculture or families, everyone deserves the right to education.
Women included. Many people take their education for granted and dont
realise that there are people putting their lives at risk in order to get an
education. One such person is Malala Yousafzai.

Malala Yousafzai is a young woman who was born in Mingora, Pakistan and
was raised in Swat Valley. Growing up was difficult as the Taliban took over
and started banning things like music and television and those who disobeyed
endured cruel punishments including public execution. In 2008, they banned
girls from attending schools. Malala was devastated by this, as she loved
learning. Using the pen name Gul Makai to protect her identity, Malala began
blogging for the BBC about life under the Taliban. She talked about how she
felt in the days before her school was to close.

When the army arrived Malala and her family were forced to flee their homes.
However, the New York Times read her blog and decided to interview her and
talk about womens education. When the Taliban was forced out of the Valley
Malala was thrilled she could attend school, but feared for her life as she spoke
out about the Taliban. Unfortunately her fears came true. On the 9th of October
2012, a masked man boarded her school bus and shot her in the head.
Miraculously, she survived and continues to promote womens right to
education. Malala has done so much for the cause and has received a Nobel
Peace Prize for her efforts. She is a truly amazing woman who fights for such an
important cause.
The reason I chose to do education is because its so important for everyone to
receive an education, no matter your gender. According to UN Women, women
make up more than two-thirds of the world's 796 million illiterate people. And
according to Malalas official website, 130,000,000 girls are out of school.
Women need to be educated in matters such as politics, maths, languages and
many other things. The role of women is changing in society and in order for
there to be equality, women must receive an education. I sometimes take for
granted that I can go to school and learn important skills that help me have a
career. Women in rural countries are still being oppressed and I want to change
that.
