Timeline Approval Form for Service Learning Experience

Student: Rose Byers Due Date: 09/19/2017

1.Provide a brief description of your topic:
How the degrading of women in the entertainment industry affects stereotyping,
confidence, womens pride, and overall treatment of women and teens in everyday life.

2.Name the community that is affected by your topic. Explain how the community is affected.
The female community is affected especially the minority female community. Its affected
because in the entertainment industry, women in general are very sexualized, miniscule
to men, perceived as very promiscuous, and overall put down. All the while women of
color are considered even lesser than that and even prominently shown hotheaded,
ghetto, and lacked of self respect. The entertainment industry is also known to solely
glorify those who have pretty curly long hair, a slim-thick body type, and a light
caramel skin tone, and dressed to impress. Although there are women in the world that
look and or act like that not females do, but due to it being all over any type of
entertainment it is set as a standard which drastically hinders the confidence of those
who are the opposite or dont quit fit those shoes, which also causes bullying, and sadly
for those who look that way but dont act that way they are criticized or stereotyped into
being that way and receive various rude comments or behavior for others.

4. Describe in a paragraph or less, what type of SLE you will complete. Explain the overall goal
of your efforts .
The type of SLE i will complete are community service hours at local women's shelters
by fundraising for food and feminine products for the shelters as well as volunteer at
YWCAs or mentorship and or tutoring, also i plan on joining with local organizations like
Girl Talk, EmpowHERment, and NC Women's United and figure out ways to put an end to
the issues we currently face as well as try to bring in acknowledgement of the Gender
Equality Club at Garinger. The overall goal of my efforts are to help eleve the inequality to
women and young girls in the charlotte area including damage done by the entertainment
industry and hopefully if i make a big enough impact it will be national but even the
slightest bit of help can impact someone and maybe theyll be inspired and carry it on.

5. An artifact is a synonym for evidence. What kind of artifacts do you specifically need to have
so that you can prove to the judges that you made an impact with your SLE hours? Think:
videos, lesson plans, email correspondence, pictures, etc.).
Pictures, videos, email correspondence, articles about what is being done, progress
sheets from girls (to show how weve helped and or what they now now that they didnt
before)
