According to classification of the equipment and other requirements stated by the customer the
impeller is selected by Multi-Wing International a·s according to material & performance

Aluminium
Pressure die cast aluminium EN AC-47100 EN AC- Al Si12Cu1(Fe)

Mechanical properties of pressure die cast alloys for EN AC-47100 EN AC- Al Si12Cu1(Fe)
• Tensile strength Rm MPa min.: 240
• Proof stress Rp0,2 MPa min.: 140
• Elongation A50mm % min.: 1
• Brinell hardness HBS min.: 70

Chemical compositions of casting alloys can be found in DS/EN 1706.

Flammability:
• Not flammable at the solid state except when subdivided in tiny particles.
Surface temperature:
• Same temperature as the surroundings and the impeller itself.

Operational limits:
• Alu-blades: 100 m/s
This limit is valid within standard operating conditions, which are:
Î Airflow: Evenly distributed and undisturbed
Î Temperature: min. temp. –60 °C max. temp. +245 °C
For elevated temperatures calculation is made with penalty factors.

PAGAS
Explosion proof material used for anti-static blades that has been tested in line with the requirements of
BS EN50014:1977 Clause 22.4.7.8 by BASEEFA.
Conclusion:
The material is deemed to have satisfied the requirements of Clause 22.4.7.8 of EN50014:1977, since the
surface resistance was found not to exceed 1 Gohm @(23 ± 2)°C and (50 ± 5)% relative humidity.
Certificate of test available on request and as well Technical Data Sheet.

Operational limits:
• PAGAS-blades: 100 m/s
This limit is valid within standard operating conditions, which are:
Î Airflow: Evenly distributed and undisturbed
Î Temperature: min. temp. –40 °C max. temp. +110 °C
For elevated temperatures calculation is made with penalty factors.

The operational limits are also depending on mechanical conditions - please use the Optimiser programme
or contact your local Multi-Wing distributor in order to get the accurate limits.

Please note that if you are using a fan casing of steel alloy (except from nickel based steel alloy) or cast
iron the tip speed is limited to 70 m/s.

General balancing criteria at Multi-Wing International a·s.

If our customers require nothing else, impellers are balanced according to G6.3 at 950 RPM. As standard
the following types of impellers are balanced:

• 12 and 14 bladed type H

• All type Z
• All type W
• All type D
• All type M
• All impellers with Al-blades are balanced

Experience & risk assessment

We have not experienced any explosions caused by the impeller in the application.

The main causes of other field failure we have experienced are due to:
1. Foreign objects
2. Fatigue due to dynamic load

To reduce the dynamic load the following should be observed:

Î Do not run the fan in stalled condition!

Î Avoid objects disturbing the airflow (shadow effects)
Î Ensure an even air distribution

Installation

Tip clearance
The minimum clearance between rotating components such as the impeller and fixed components e.g. the
fan casing shall be at least 1 % of the possible contact diameter of the finish component, but shall not be
less than 2 mm in the axial or radial directions nor be more than 20 mm.
On applications fitted with anti-vibration mounts, consideration to increased tip clearance should be given
to allow for movement and vibration.

Mounting of impeller
The axial distance between impeller and protection guard as well as the density of the protection guard
should as a minimum conform to any regulations set by local authorities or industrial organizations.
If in doubt, please contact your local Multi-Wing distributor.

If possible, avoid the use of hammers.

If unavoidable, use a mallet or strike with a wooden mandrel. Alternatively aluminium hubs may be heated
to ease mounting.

Spin test & Stress

Based on actual spin tests our operating limits are defined as 50% of the failure speed, which corresponds
to a safety-factor of 4. Running at 1.15 times operating speed leaves a safety factor of 3.
Our impellers are designed with a max. calculated stress less than 50% of the yield stress. This is the
peak stress found by FEM analysis, so the criteria of a max mean stress less than 2/3 of the yield stress is
easily met.
