This Suite is founded on the story of the same name by Cervantes,
and of the four parts, the first three are characteristic. The fourth is
somewhat descriptive, introducing. the Don’s warlike but sad nature, Dur-
ing his journey in quest of adventure he discovers the windmills. After
the encounter he again sets forth, lamely at first, but eventually is again
the self-confident, hereically-inclined knight of yore.
The time of performance without intermission is 12 minutes, divided ap-
proximately. as follows: N° I-$ minutes, N9 II- 244 minutes, N2 III- 244 min-
utes and N@ IV- 4 minutes. The first number should be played rather lei-
surely and the bell should be a deep-toned one. In N9 II small notes
should not be played unless the instrument named be not represented. The
melody in the first part of N@ III though written for oboe, is cued in the
cornet, clarinet, soprano and alto saxophone parts, and may be played by
either, or by such combination of these instruments as the conductor may
find available. The next-to-last bar in N@ IV (rall) should be taken very slowly.
