Genetic linkage

-When two genes occur closely together in the same chromosome and segregate together.

 Thomas Hunt Morgan, (born Sept. 25, 1866, Lexington, Ky., U.S.—died Dec. 4, 1945, Pasadena,
Calif.), American zoologist and geneticist, famous for his experimental research with the fruit fly
(Drosophila) by which he established the chromosome theory of heredity. He showed that genes are
linked in a series on chromosomes and are responsible for identifiable, hereditary traits.

Epistasis occurs:

-when another gene is affected by the other

-when one gene completely masks the other gene

 Can emerge anytime in single gene traits

 The genotype at one gene affects expression of another gene
 Has 2 types: Recessive and Dominant
 Entirely different from recessive and dominant
 The gene that suppresses is said to be epistatic, and the gene which remains obscure is
hypostatic.
 Sometimes called inhibiting genes because of their effect on other genes

Questions:

1. He demonstrated that linked genes must be real physical objects that are located in close
proximity on the same chromosome. – Thomas Hunt Morgan
2. What did this geneticist used for his experiment? – Fruit Flies
3. What are the types of epistasis? – Recessive and Dominant
