Nails are located on the very tips of fingers and toes — parts of the human body the most distant from its centre. This means that in the spatial system of the body the nail areas are the last to develop with regard to other areas. The head and trunk are the first to appear. They are followed by the extremities, the hands, and feet. Then come fingers and toes with nail plates at their ends. Therefore, the for- mation of nails is the final stage of the body’s structuring; their regions concentrate information about the whole body presented as correspondence systems. Nail areas, as compared with other correspondence systems, are especially sensitive and subtle. They are pro- tected by nail plates and are of the round shape symbolys- ing perfection. In the nail region one can find a correspond- ence not only to the human body proper but to all visceral organs. All energies circulating in the body pass through nail regions. Being a site of energy concentration, nail regions Su Jok Nail Therapy 3 Preface provide the possibility to treat illness by acting on the body’s energy system. Lam glad to offer to your attention the method of nail therapy aimed to be used for the benefit of people. I pay tribute to Drs. Violetta Nikolaeva and Tamara Petrakova who collected and edited my lectures on nail therapy thus ensuring the appearance of the book about this new meth- od of treatment. I would also like to thank all medical doc- tors of Su Jok Academy and members of the editorial group who helped to prepare this book for publishing. Prof. Park Jae Woo Moscow, February 2001 ew 4 ‘Su Jok Nail Therapy INTRODUCTION What does man need nails for? Having much less density than animal claws the nails of a human being do not play a leading role in his survival, defence and obtain- ing food. But nature, as is known, gives nothing too much. Everything has its purpose and meaning. The functional meaning of the nails is that, being dense horny formations, they protect the soft tissues of fingertips from any, main- ly mechanical, damage. But is their role reduced to that only? Look at them carefully, eye them from the viewpoint of the universal laws of being and you will see a wonder- ful tool for maintaining and restoring health, unique cur- ative systems, given to man by Nature which it is now time to learn. Su Jok Nail Therapy 5 CHAPTER 1 THE THREE GREAT FORCES OF NATURE Chapter 1. The three great forces of Nature The beauty and versatility of the world, rationality and evolution of its elements — all this is the result of har- monious interaction of the three fundamental forces — Homo, Hetero and Neutro. The names of these forces re- flect the essence of their action. The Homo force (from the Greek «homoios» meaning similar, like) is aimed at pre- serving immutability, the Hetero force (from the Greek «heteros» — other, different, varied) tends to change all being, the Hetero force (from the Latin «neutrum» — nei- ther this, nor that) is the origin of Homo and Hetero and controls these opposite polarities, maintaining balance and harmony in the surrounding world. Knowing the properties of these fundamental forc- es, it will not be difficult to place any phenomenon with- in one of the three categories, and also to find other el- ements that form, together with this phenomenon, the so- called Triorigin unit. The basis of all being is the unity of three components: matter (Homo), information (Het- ero), and energy (Neutro), the latter serving as a media- tor. In the material world three aggregate states of mat- ter are present: solid (Homo), gaseous (Hetero) and in- termediate — liquid one (Neutro). The seasons of a year change one another from cold winter (Homo) toe hot sum- mer (Hetero) and back, through the neutral spring and autumn. 8 ‘Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter I. The three great forces of Nature From the same standpoints one can evaluate proper- ties inherent in various phenomena. For example, constric- tion is a Homo property, expansion is Hetero and balance is. Neutro; destruction — Homo, creation — Hetero and pres- ervation — Neutro; unchangeability - Homo, changeabil- ity — Hetero, stability - Neutro; low speed is Homo, fast speed — Hetero, medium speed — Neutro. The Hetero force ensures the fastest and strongest changes in any systems, including such a complex system as the human body. That is why of special interest is the question what areas of the human body are under the most pronounced influence of this force. All processes in Hete- ro areas should be characterised by great intensity, activity and high speed of any changes, curative ones included. In the human body, the areas the closest to the cen- tre possess Homo properties (immobility, stability), dis- tal, peripheral areas have Hetero properties (activity, change of position in space), and intermediate areas have Neutro properties (maintenance of balance, order). For example, each extremity consists of three parts: upper arm (thigh) connected with the body is Homo, hand (foot) the most distal from the body is Hetero, forearm (shin) that links them is Neutro. Any finger or toe, in its turn, has the proximal phalanx (Homo), distal phalanx (Hetero) and middle phalanx (Neutro). Su Jok Nail Therapy 9 Chapter I. The three great forces of Nature Nail is the Hetero area on the Hetero phalanx of a finger/toe Fig. 1. The central regions of the body are influenced by the Homo * force, regions the most distant from the centre ~ by the Hetero force Evaluating the human body from the Triorigin view- point, one can arrive at the conclusion that the maximum concentration of Hetero influences can be found in the tips and nails of fingers and toes (Fig. 1). Owing to this unique feature, literally every millimetre in these areas is loaded with active points, through which a rapid and intensive action on the state of the body can be obtained resulting in effective, high-quality treatment. 10 Su Jok Nail Therapy _ CHAPTER 2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Chapter 2. Historical background The history of the art of healing provides a great number of facts that confirm the interest medical practi- tioners had to nail regions. The state of nails has always had a great diagnostic value. In the ancient treatise of tra- ditional Chinese medicine «Nei Jing» there is a mention about an invisible connection between the nails and the liv- er. It reads «Outside the liver is represented by the nails as well. The greenish colour of the nails points to disor- der of the liver, while if there is a touch of black on them and many strips (hatches) this points to the gall bladder obstruction...» There is a popular saying in Chinese medicine: «Nails are the outer part of tendons». So in the book «Xiu Ben» one can find the following statement: «The liver is connected with the tendons, and its splendour shines on the nails...». Therefore, ancient Chinese healers be- lieved that the state of the liver and tendons could be evaluated by the way the nails look. The good state of the liver results in the tendons being firm and strong, and nails elastic and solid. A decreased function of the liver results in weak tendons and soft, deformed nails that brittle easily. Apart from making a diagnose through nails and ad- jacent areas, these regions were also used to successfully treat disorders. As is known, the hand and foot meridian 12 Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter 2. Historical background Zhongchong Zhongchong Guanchong() (CO Chaochong’ CQ)’ shangyang F Shaoze Heart m. Distal meridian points on hands and feet points located in the periungual spaces of the fingers and toes are ones of the most active (Fig. 2). In classical acu- puncture the Shixuan points are used that can be found on Su Jok Nail Therapy 13 Chapter 2. Historical background the tips of fingers and toes. Millenia-long medical practice has proven the exceptional effectiveness of using these most peripheral bodily points. Indications for their employment are emergency states, such as loss of consciousness, hyper- tensive crisis, hysterical fit, etc. The main unique peculi- arity of these points is that action on them will result in a fast change of the state of the body not limited to a local curative effect (Fig. 3). Shixuan pp. Fig. 3. Points influencing the condition of the whole body Man’s striving to obtain through nails valuable in- formation has found reflection in chiromancy, the prac- tice that uses the colour, shape and size of nails to judge about the state of health and peculiar features of a person. Thus, pink nails have long been thought to point to stead- fastness and stability; uneven, curved, twisted nails are a sign of wilful disposition; short, thick and hard nails point to irritable moods; and pale, round nails indicate that their 14 Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter 2. Historical background owner should not be trusted; large nails mean health and physical strength, and also optimism and desire to domi- nate other people. And though these conclusions, of course, are not questionless, they are the result of years- long observations and deserve to be taken into account and analysed. Modern medicine employs diagnosing by changes of shape and relief of the nails. Different authors dis- tinguish and describe over twenty kinds of nail deform- ities and connection of each of them with a particular dis- order. Thus, a short flat nail points to organic disease of the heart, the big size of the semilunum to tachycardia, absence of the semilunum to cardiac neurosis, a big con- vex nail to lung tuberculosis. By the triangular shape of nails disorders of the spine and spinal cord are diagno- sed, a gnawed nail is assessed as a symptom of neurosis (Figs. 4 to 11), etc. Ca Fig. 4. The active character of the points in these areas is due to exceptional concen- tration of the Hetero force in them, which is convincingly confirmed by anatomical and physiological characteristics of the nail. 18 Su Jok Nail Therapy CHAPTER 3 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF THE NAIL Chapter 3. Anatomy and physiology of the nail Nails represent horny plates on the dorsal surface of the terminal phalanges of fingers and toes. There can be distinguished the free border, body and root of the nail. The surface of a healthy nail is normally smooth, shining. The nail plate is surrounded by nail walls (two lateral and a posterior ones); a thin pellicle (nail cuticle) gets over the nail plate from the posterior nail wall (Fig. 2). The nail plate is situated on the nailbed that is-termed the matrix in the area of the nail root (its proximal segment) and contains specialised cells that form the nail plate and ensure its growth. In a lesser degree, these cells are scattered through- out the whole of the nailbed. The distal segment of the ma- trix in the shape of a lighter semilunum (Iunula).is wisible through the nail root. Nail free border Semilunum Lateral nail wall Nail cuticle : Posterior nail wall Fig. 12. Structure of the nail 20 ‘Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter 3. Anatomy and physiology of the nail A peculiar feature of the nailbed is absolute absence of the subcutaneous fat layer formed by fibrous framework and fat cells. Such a layer is not present on the eyelids, in the foreskin area and small pudendal lips either, while on the nose, auricles of the ear and red border of the lips it is insignificant (up to 2 mm). The nailbed has abundant blood supply. Owing to its proximity to the surface of the capillar network in the area of the posterior wall of the nail on the fingers, this site is the most convenient for studying the morphology of capil- laries and blood flow speed in them (capillaroscopy). The region of the nailbed is amply provided with free nerve endings which points to a pronounced functional activity of this area (Hetero property). Nails and hair, sebaceous and sudoriferous glands, are derivative from the epidermis and develop out of the ecto- dermal germinal layer. Nails appear during the third month of the intrauterine life and grow slowly. During the seventh to eighth month only, the nail plate begins to stand out of the soft tissues of the terminal phalanx. The sizes of the nail plate have individual differenc- es, Its average length is 10 to 15 mm, width 10 to 17 mm, thickness of the nail body is 0.30 to 0.37 mm: In new-borns and infants the width of nails is the same on both hands. Later on, on the dominant hand that is characterized by Su Jok Nail Therapy 21 Chapter 3. Anatomy and physiology of the nail more activity and, consequently, greater Hetero properties (from the functional viewpoint), nails grow wider as com- pared with the less active hand. Thus, the right-handers have a wider nail plate on the right hand than on the left one, in the left-handers it is the reverse case. The nail’s growing rate varies and depends on genet- ic factors, age, general state of health, occupation, etc. A complete renewal of the nail occurs within 96 to 115 days, during one day the nail’s average growth amounts from 0.1 to 0.2 mm. Considering the rate of the nails’ growing the third finger is the leader, being the longest (Hetero proper- ty). Normally, in men (Hetero) nails grow faster than in women (Homo); on the right hand of right-handers (func- tional Hetero) they grow somewhat faster that on the left (Homo) hand; on the hands (Hetero) they grow two- or three times faster that on the feet (Homo). With the advancement of age the nail’s growth gradually slows down which is related to the fading influence of the Hetero force in the body. In summer (Hetero period of the year) nails grow faster that in winter (Homo period). On the whole, during the average 70 years of human life span they grow by 4 to 5 meters. The continual growth of nails during lifetime is a vivid and convincing manifestation of Hetero possibilities of these body regions. It is the nails (and hair) that need to be 22 Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter 3. Anatomy and physiology of the nail trimmed all the time. Even after death (!), in the Homo state of the body, the growth of nails can be observed for sever- al days which points to residual activity of the Hetero force in the body regions where it was at its maximum during lifetime. Su Jok Nail Therapy 23 CHAPTER 4 NAIL ~ CORRESPONDENCE SYSTEMS Chapter 4. Nail correspondence systems Through the nail area and adjoining areas one can make fast and effective curative stimulation of any organ and part of the body. This influence is effected at a distance through miniature projections of both the body in general and its particular parts, by acting on the nail phalanx of a finger or toe (in the so called correspondence systems). A correspondence system is a peculiar information-and-en- ergy copy of the bedy (organ, body part) in which not only its anatomic structure is reflected but also its functional state. The totality of all correspondence systems in the human body represents the body’s Homo system. Many authors have described a great number of cor- respondence systems that have various shapes and location. The most well-known are the systems of the hands and feet, the systems of fingers/toes and their distal phalanges, the systems located on the iris, auricles of the ear, on the tongue, and others. These systems are successfully used for diag- nosing and treatment of disorders, as well as for preven- tive purposes. Publications describing the round corre-~ spondence systems appeared as a result of awareness of the universal character of the spherical Homo-shape and its role in the evolution. The shape of the earth, human head, in- ternal organs, cell, atom is nothing else but a sphere or some its derivative. The spherical shape is implicitly present in all existence at initial stages of development. Then, in the 26 Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter 4. Nail correspondence systems process of evolution, it gradually becomes more compli- cated, The embryo which has a roundish shape (Homo) pass- es from the contracted state into the state of the foetus whose body gets straightened and looks like an oblong structure with the extremities pressed tightly to the trunk and the poor- ly developed cervical part of the spinal column. Then the outstanding parts straighten and grow, and the human body acquires the pentagonal mature shape (Hetero). All stages in the development of man are reflected in the correspond- ence systems. The round systems are related to the initial evolution forms. They are located on the round areas of the body — around the orbit of the eye, umbilicus, in the region of the frontal tubers, kneecaps, malleoli, palms, balls of the fingers and toes, and on the nail plates (Fig. 13). The «insect» systems are information copies of the foetus and are characterised by the oblong shape, short and thick servical spine and the extremities strained along the lateral surfaces of the body. In these systems the projections of the arms and legs take up a position similar to the natu- ral position of the extremities in a new-born baby, when they are flexed to touch one another in the area of the knee and elbow joints. It will not be difficult to draw a mental picture of such systems on the extremities and on the fin- gers and toes (Fig. 14). Su Jok Nail Therapy 27 Chapter 4, Nail correspondence systems Fig. 13. Round systems on the human body The standard correspondence systems of the hands and feet are pentagonal; there the five fingers or toes correspond to the five protruding parts, and the body is represented in its mature shape (Figs. 15, 16). Each correspondence sys- tem has certain features of its own which should be taken into account in treating diseases. One can select the most 28 ‘Su Jok Nail Therapy Chapter 4. In the individual standard correspondence systems, where the human body is projected onto each hand (foot), the nails of the thumbs and big toes correspond to the back surface of the head, which allows to use them to act on the occipital and parietal lobes of the brain (Fig. 17). In the unit- ed closed standard correspondence systems the body is projected onto the two hands or two feet simultaneously. In the «insect» system the relationship between the brain and the nail of each finger and to¢ is explicit (Fig. 22). Besides, there are the nails correspondence systems of their own. Overlapping of these different-level systems reflects the holographic principle of the Homo system of the hu- man body. Owing to this phenomenon, information is con- centrated in the nail regions which enhances considerably their diagnostic and curative value. The terminal segments of the digits’ nail phalanges are independent systems of correspondence. These are the «mini-insect» systems and microsystems. In a «mini-in- 36 Su Jok Nail Therapy
