Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology (DBB)
This department that offers bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees was born in 2013
after combing the Graduate Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology established in
1993 and the Department of Life Sciences established in 2005. After finishing their base
courses on chemistry, physics, biology and biostatistics, undergraduate students may
explore all fields of Bioscience at molecular, cellular, physiological, and evolutionary
levels by taking a group of well-designed advanced courses, including lecture and
laboratory training according to their own interests.
DBB requires students to actively engage in research by conducting independent
research projects at a laboratory of their choices. Students are also required to join
training seminars to increase their ability to present their thoughts
Before earning their master or doctoral degrees, graduate students must conduct
intensive independent research within the following four programs.
Molecular and cellular biology: This program is concentrated on immune cell activation,
apoptosis and gene therapy, stem cell culturing and relevant applications, cancer,
neuron-degeneration, metabolic diseases and inflammation. Research findings have
been published in prestigious journals such as Transgenic Research.
Developmental biology: This program is focused on hypoxia, gene regulation, signal
transduction and carcinogenesis, animal embryonic developments, transgenic fish
model systems, and reproductive physiology. Research findings have been published in
esteemed journals such as Cell Death and Development and Develapment Dynamics,
and Molecular Carcinogenesis.
Chemical biology: This program is centered on cellular-methylation and DNA-repair
mechanisms, biological anti-oxidation systems, environmental analytical chemistry.

Functional genomics and proteomics: This program is concentrated on protein
engineering, bioinformatics, gene regulation systems, molecular evolution, and bio-
resource development. Research findings have been published in reputable journals
such as theJournal of Proteome Research, Plas One, and Briefing in Bioinformatics.
DBB graduate students have applied their multi-disciplinary learning and research
abilities in the Center of Excellence for the Oceans (formerly Center of Excellence for
Marine Bioscience and Biotechnology,CMBB), the Molecular Integrative Biology (MIB)
program operated between NTOU at the Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology at
Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Therefore, the DBB is involved in the transfer of state-of-the-
art biotechnology nat only for marine and aquaculture research but also for
technological innovations that can lead to further insights in all of the life sciences. By
participating in project-oriented and hypothesis-driven experiments, students can hone
their unique abilities and prepare themselves to become leaders in the bio-industry or
academia.
The DBB has been awarded a research excellence fund by the Center of Excellence for
the Oceans for 6 years has been actively conducting a study on environmental
adaptation under the umbrella of global environmental change. The DBB will continue
to provide crucial contributions in these fields to solve contemporary challenges by
conducting high-level research and by teaching.

™ The education goals of the Department of Bioscience and
Biotechnology are training "LEADERS" in the field of life sciences. The
core of "LEADERs" program is Learning, with the characteristics of
Efficient, Active, Devoting, Employable, and Recreating.
+ LStrong fundamental knowledge We paid much attention to the
teaching of fundamental knowledge by offering the various course of life
sciences with both broaden and deepen vision.
» 2.Training professional research ability The Department requires its
students to engage in research actively by conducting independent
research projects at the laboratory of their choice.
+ 3.Fostering the independent thinking ability Besides the implement of
the research projects, the students are required to engage in seminars to
enhance their public speaking ability and critical thinking skills.
+ 4.Cultivating creativity and innovation The development of
biotechnology industry depends on the creativity and innovation. We
encourage students participate through structured exercises and discuss
during the class.
+ 5.Improving the expression ability Many courses request students to
have the oral presentations and reports, which could train the students to
express themselves and organization ability.
+ 6.Preparing to face the world The English language is the second most
widely spoken tongue in the world today. Our students have enough
English language ability and background knowledge to face the world.Programs

Prospects
Advanced Study and Career Opportunities
» Advanced Study
Students can choose local and overseas graduate schools of biology, life science, physiology,
biomedicine, medical technology, biopharmacy, micro-immunology, molecular
medicine, genetics, zoology, botany, plant pathology, entomology, parasitology, fishery, marine
resources, marine biology, etc. for a Master or Ph.D. degree in western or Chinese medicine.
= Career Opportunities
Students are equipped to conduct research in the laboratory. Students are also trained to use all
types of instruments and equipment. They will be also adept in experiment
design, statistical analysis, and ecological environment evaluation and conservation. According
to their interests students are free to choose career paths such as teachers,
research assistants, technicians and symbolic analysts.Research Characteristics
@ Our current research interests are:
Studies using antioxidant enzymes to reducing oxidative damages,
protection from aging.
@ Proteomic analysis of DNA damage-binding proteins expressed in
zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos and unicellular alga Chlorella
pyrenoidosa.Gene regulation of spontaneously expressed heat shock
protein 70 in zebrafish.
@Genetic regulation of fish development. Toxicity of environmental
hormones in fish embryos.
@ Biomolecular engineering. It includes cloning and manipulating target
biomolecules on a rational base's in diverse areas of pharmaceutical,
agricultural, industrial, and environmental applications.
@ Metalloid speciation in marine. It includes developing analytical
methods for metalloid speciations and study the metabolism of
metalloids biotransformation in marine food webs.
@Gene therapy. The Fas-Fas ligand (FasL) system plays an important role
in the induction of lymphoid apoptosis and has been implicated in the
suppression of immune responses. Our projects develop a gene
therapy strategy using gene transfer of FasL on tumor cell to inhibit
tumor cells growth in vivo and to make tumor regression after FasL
gene transfer into cancer cells.
@ Lipase engineering. The yeast Candida rugosa produces extracellular
lipases(CRLs) extensively used for industrial purposes. In vitro evolution
methods are performed to approach CRLs for the structure-function
relationship, the enzyme reaction mechanism, and designation of novel
lipase to its new applications.
