PROFESOR DR.
KHAIRUL ANUAR
BIN ABDULLAH
DEKAN UTMSPACE
Assalamualaikum,

ABDULLAH

02 KHAIRIL SAFWAN
title faith and honour
Khairil Safwan is based in Kuala Lumpur and his
major interests are social and humanity photography.
He is one of a few young and emerging Asian
photographers who has been chosen to attend
the prestigious free workshop at the Angkor
Photography Festival . His interest on photography
is to document humanity, social issues, and religion.
His work has been published extensively, including
in Guardian, Corbis, Daily Mail UK, Jessica Men
Malaysia, The Star, Scanpix Denmark, Zoom
Ediciones, Averbode Uitgerverij.

Faith and Honour puts forward the issues which

hover over the head covering worn in public by
some Muslim women or hijab donned my Muslim
women to protect their demureness. The steadfast
Khairil Safwan challenged himself to discover the
regimes of the Muslim women in his place of birth.
The clandestine nature of hijab is acknowledged.
Nevertheless, this young enthusiast valiantly
dwells in this secret to enhance his knowledge
in the aforementioned faith and honour which
have long been close at heart and uphold by
his adored mother, cherished sisters, respected
neighbours and all the women who have walked
into his life. Hijab is only a symbolic depiction
of a religious decree. The actual faith and
honour lies in the women themselves which
should be discovered to see the beauty in
the religious code that governs the wearing
of such clothing. Faith and Honour opens
the door to a more intimate viewpoint of a
Muslim woman’s private life and what she
chooses to adhere. The strength of faith
in a Muslim woman will ensure the eternal
demureness ages and ages hence.

04 MAZLAN HUSAIN
title live and death
‘It is photography that found him’, are the appropriate
sentence to describe about him on how it all began.
Started as a hobby and learn through photography
magazines and the internet to some extent, open his
mind and realize that photography is endless. He
also believe that photography should get away from
the norm and make room for something new and
different from common. Was impressed by the work
of Pro foreign photographers he was very eager to
try new concepts without regard criticism. A word
’Wow’ from the audience is more than enough to
give satisfaction and made him feel very much
appreciated.
Photography should not only be fulfilling but also
exciting to explore. This is the impulse for this
photographer’s creative work. He adopted the
Macro Photography panache which depicts still
life pictures merged into one. The use of natural
textures in the things around us is added to create
both ‘feeling’ and ‘soul’ to a masterpiece. Life
and death of animals and insects, which we come
across on a daily basis is the subject that he found
most intriguing to be translated in the form of a
photograph. Through the Life and Death series,
Mazlan uncovers the coexistence of insects,
mollusks and mankind. Mankind definitely
takes these creatures’ existence for
granted. Thus the series hope to evoke
a feeling of responsibility among us
towards these insignificant creatures
finally.

The collapse of the family unit in Malaysia is at an

alarming stage. The increase in divorce cases and
out-of-wedlock births reported on a daily basis in
the newspapers is also shocking. These moved
Juhari to approach these children to understand
and gauge the effects of divorce, abuse and social
ills on these innocent souls. Rumah Titian Harapan
was his setting of choice to further enhance his
comprehension of the nerve-racking situation
for these tenderfoots who are often glorified as
‘our future generation’. This labour of love is
dedicated to these hopefuls, who barely
understand the meaning of life and
in desperate need of attention and

July 9, 1990 Adi Hafiz bin Che Ani was born. He is

Zaitun. His interest in photography began earlier
in his school days. He began to buy photography
magazines and started follow Malaysian

city center, he is influenced and interested in
fashion photography. To him Art comes from style,
color and appearance. As an additional he loves to
see objects and subject to be combine in a picture.
This was his reason to name his title of his photos as
‘Fashion in Fencing’

Fashion is defined as the state of being popular at a

particular time or place in terms of clothes, hair etc.
Fashion is observed by all in order to gain positive
vibes or attention regardless of age or status. Here
clothes are portrayed as the medium of getting
these positive vibes. In the world of photography,
fashion is not only appreciated but also inspires. The
fashion observed in the sport of fighting with long
thin swords or fencing is highlighted in my work.
Fencing triggers fashion in my head. The similarity
can be seen in both. Both are at its best when they
are always new and swift in nature.

20 AMRAN YAHAYA
title temuan
Amran Yahaya began to show a deep interest
in photography when he joined his school’s
photography club and took photos for its magazine.
Being an Architectural 3D Visualizer based in Kuala
Lumpur, he slowly develops a passion for street
portraiture, travel and journalistic photography. He
believes that even if someone indulges in the art
of photography just as a hobby, he or she needs
to keep improving and build a strong and desirable
portfolio. And building such a portfolio is what he
aspires to do.

The Temuan project revolves around the day-to-day

lives of the Temuan indigenous tribe in Kampung
Tekir, Negeri Sembilan. Unlike some Temuan
settlements which have been relocated by property
developers, the settlers, consisting of approximately
150 families, in the Labu district still enjoy the liberty
to live their lives to their hearts content. They are
free to roam and hunt in the neighbouring forest
and enjoy the day’s catch, at home with family
and friends. Their off-the-cuff and open attitudes
towards life never fail to make me feel at home
every time. Traditions and values are the essence
of this tribe. Though conservative at heart, and in
so many ways, they still aspire to advance and walk
hand- in-hand with the country’s development. My
Tekir experience is priceless. Thus, I would like to
express my heartiest gratitude to these estimable
individuals who are always accommodating during
my humble journey, namely Tok Batin Sturi, Cikgu
Rindu, Cikgu Asmah, Pakcik Lan, Les and not
forgetting all the children and valued friends
in Tekir for their assistance and affability
which has never failed to inspire me.

Born in Kluang, Johor, Rosdin Sabni, 32 years,
currently is working as a Journalism Photographer
with public service since four years ago. Hold
a certificate of Industrial Product Design from
ITI Pasir Gudang, he then further his studies
at Sepang Higher Vocational Institute. He had
working experience as a designer (industry) for
several companies. However, due to his passion
to photography, he chooses to be a photographer
today and pursues Executive Diploma in Creative
Photography and Digital Imaging (UTM Space)
to gain more knowledge of photography. Portrait
photography is the photography that most interest
him.

‘Passion’ is a distinct characteristic that not every

person has the opportunity to experience. When
one is said to have passion, that means that this
person is driven and full of enthusiasm. ‘Passion’
can be expressed in many different ways, and in
many different situations. ‘Passion’ is described
as a powerful emotion, such as love, hate, joy, or
anger. Anyone can be joyful, but when someone is
passionately joyful, it takes the meaning of “joyful” to
a whole new level. A person can “fly into a passion,”
meaning they are experiencing intense rage and
emotion. A person described as “passionate” is
generally very motivated, enthusiastic, and full
of life. Doing what you love and doing what is
parallel with your purpose, will be the thing
that will motivate you to jump out of bed in the
morning and look forward to the day ahead.
Your work is not “work” when it is exciting,
rewarding and interesting to you. It’s not a
“job” but a passion.

26 LOKMAN SOKRAN
title aurat
Born and bred in Kluang, Johor in 1975, Lokman
Sokran was first introduced to the wonders of
photography in March 2011. This was when he
enrolled in the Diploma in Executive Photography
and Digital Imaging course, one of the courses
offered in relation to photography. This turn of
event in his life took him further into the world of
photography. An aspiring graphic designer, he
adores the artistic world. He is inspired by not only
humanity and social themes but also beyond these
in his art.

In his Aurat series he explores the issues which

linger around the word aurat (ornament or shame),
as mentioned in the holy Quran. In the Quran, a
Muslimah’s (Muslim woman) physique must be
shielded, protecting her from undesirable gazes.
Ideally, this shield, in the form of hijab and covered
clothing, has the goal towards preventing any
Muslim women from becoming a sexual entity. In
his attempt to do this, he cleverly compares this
religious significance to the nature of a mannequin.
Here, Lokman nurtures the true meaning of
freedom. He also raised another interesting
issue in which he explores what is aurat
among Muslim Women. Clad in body hugging
attires, they appear “naked” just like the
mannequin as suggested in the snapshots.
In ‘Aurat’, Lokman Sokran hopes to share
dynamic views on the matter to a more
far-reaching audience. This is where
he successfully choreographed the
question of whether donning the hijab
nowadays is a shariah compliant
way of dressing or a sign of protest
against the ruling of Islam. Aurat will
share the answers.

title women & shades
The pride and joy of a Felda settler in the state of
Pahang, the artist was born and bred in a big family.
Leaving moderately, he received both his formal
education, namely primary and secondary education,
in the same place. As a government servant of 15
years and an entrepreneur in 7, his experiences are
his best teacher in understanding life and his
surroundings. Actively involved in creative writing
and theatrical work, he also does his part for the
society through a youth movement and voluntary
group. These are his contributions to the society
which he does devotedly.

Women & Shades : The two magical words in any

woman’s vocabulary. Women are thrilled by the
thought of fashion, brands, clothes, handbags,
shoes and accessories. Being the fairest of all is the
epitome of a woman’s fashion aspiration. Parallel
to this is the wisdom in shades or colour in every
attempt to look her best. Every victory in looking
the fairest of all is dedicated to her ability in making
the perfect choice in colour and what the colour
signifies. Her look is her self-portrait. Both women
and shades complement each other impeccably.

in a very high velocity is taking its toll its beauty.
This is what is happening to the Malaysian

title the young shepherd
Photojournalism is one of his favourite genre in
photography. It helps him to express his personal
views towards some issues or events. It also shares
his feeling to the audience and let them see from
his point of view. But the most important is, he will
be able to bring and show his audience the actual
things that happened in the event where they are
not able to go or be in. His name is Muhammad Heza
Zainudin, a 28 years old and born in Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur is the dream destination for the

younger generations to make it big in the city.
However, this is not true to a greenhorn name Adi
Fikri. He decided to no longer be part of the famed
city’s hustle and bustle, fortune and fame and
glorified stories. He chose to return to his beloved
fatherland Masjid Tanah where he ventured into
goat farming. Moved by this young entrepreneur’s
enthusiasm, Muhammad Heza recorded the
youth’s daily routine in running the farm without any
assistance. The Young Sheperd is a depiction of
the courageous young man who chose not to live
comfortably in a big city but slog under the sun to
get what he needs for himself and his family. This
courage should be lauded and trailed by all youths.
