(i) A rectangular plane surface 2m wide and 3m deep lies in water in such a way that its plane
makes an angle of 300 with the free surface of water. Determine the total pressure and depth of centre
of pressure. When the upper edge is 1.5m below the free water surface.
1.a.(ii) A circular gate in a vertical wall has a diameter of 4m. The water surface on the upstream side
is 8m above the top of the gate and on the downstream side 1m above the top of the gate. Find the
forces acting on the two side of the gate and the resultant force acting on the gate and its location.

1.b. Find the total pressure and position of centre of pressure on a triangular plate of base 2m and
height 3m which is immersed in water in such a way that the plane of the plate makes an angle of 60 0
with the free water surface of water. The base of the plate is parallel to water surface and at a depth of
2.5m from free water surface.
2.a. Sketch and explain the working principle of reciprocating pump.

2.b. Sketch and explain the construction details of centrifugal pump.
3.a.(i) A single acting reciprocating pump running at 30rpm delivers 0.012 m 3/s of water. The
diameter of the piston is 250mm and stroke length is 500mm. Determine (i) Theoretical discharge, (ii)
Coefficient of discharge, (iii) Slip and (iv) Percentage slip.
3.a.(ii) A single acting pump has a diameter 500mm,stroke length 0.4m discharges 0.07615 m 3/s at
60rpm through a total head of 15m. Find (i) % slip, (ii) Theoretical discharge and (iii) Efficiency of
pump.
(Or)
3.b. A double acting reciprocating pump having piston area 0.1 m 2 has a stroke of 0.3 m long. the
pump is discharging 2.4 m3 of water per minute at 45 rpm through a total height of 10m. Find the slip
of the pump and power required to drive the pump.
