Teeth Grinding A My daughter is almost five and recently she has begun to grind her teeth in her sleep. I'm worried this will affect her teeth. Why does it happen and is there a way | can get her to stop? What you described is known as nocturnal bruxism. Both adults and children may have this non-functional grinding habit. It is actually quite common with one in three children exhibiting this habit at night. Though there have been many theories for the cause of this habit, the actual reason for nocturnal bruxism is unclear. Possible reasons could be psychological stress and being overly active in ‘the day. Changes or conditions in the mouth may also initiate this grinding habit. These include teething symptoms due to exfoliation of baby teeth and eruption of adult teeth. But most of the time there is no clear reason or cause for nocturnal bruxism. There is also no proven method for the cessation of the habit. But the good news is that most children will grow out the habit and no treatment is needed. Treatment is only needed when there is excessive wear of the outermost layer of tooth structure (enamel) resulting in sensitivity and discomfort. However such extensive wear is rare and most of the time the baby teeth are not in the mouth long enough to exhibit such wear because all baby teeth should fall out (exfoliate) by age eleven to twelve. In conclusion, rest assured that nocturnal bruxism is not a serious problem but | strongly encouraged a visit to a paediatric dentist for a thorough examination and consultation. *This article first appeared on Motherhood Magazine (http://www.motherhood.com.sg) in Jun'17 Sy OOF CO Ee Should | get my child assessed? Specific Learning Differences (SpLD or SLD) is a broad term used to cover a spectrum of learning challenges, which impact language, literacy and numeracy acquisition in a child who although has been exposed to adequate educational opportunities, continues to face learning delays otherwise unexpected. Clinically, SpLD is defined as a type of Neurodevelopmental Disorder that impacts specific academic skills, which form the basis of academic learning. Therefore, SpLD impacts the way information is processed and acquired and has a genetic link so it may run in families. Some of the more common types of SpLD are Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and Attention Deficit (hyperactivity) Disorder. SpLD doesn’t always occur in isolation and research shows that a significant number of individuals with SpLD have more than one learning or behavioural challenge. Signs of such difficulties may appear as soon as the child begins formal education in preschool and a reliable diagnosis of these needs is best done when the child has had adequate exposure to general education. EARLY INTERVENTION Not surprisingly, early identification and intervention of SpLD is vital for a child's well-being and educational progress. A psycho-educational assessment in the area provides useful information about an individual's learning profile or behavioural challenges and helps to identify the presence of a learning or developmental difficulty. Specifically, it helps to illuminate an individual's strengths and weaknesses in terms of cognitive abilities (e.g., verbal and non-verbal abilities, processing speed, and memory) and academic skills (e.g., reading, writing, and mathematics abilities). Delayed identification, which in turn impacts the timely provision of support, may lead to emotional distress, poor self-esteem and frustrations leading the individual to become withdrawn or develop further behavioural issues. Hence, it’s vital that we familiarise ourselves with the signs of SpLD and avoid labelling underachievement as a result of apathy or laziness. Through a psycho-educational assessment, behavioural or socio-emotional issues, which are interfering with learning or development, can also be identified. Se ee OS Ow a LEARNING DIFFERENCES As you read more about SpLD, you may have come across different terms and it's helpful to note that there are indeed several terms used to define learning challenges. For instance, Specific Learning Difficulties is another commonly used term. However, the DAS firmly believes that all learners have strengths and areas of need. DAS deliberately uses ‘differences’ as we adopt a social model of disability and the term, therefore, implies that with the timely, evidence-based intervention and adequate support, learners may be able to overcome their challenges. HOW CAN | HELP MY CHILD? Each child is unique. In order to help them overcome their challenges, SpLD and their learning profile must be identified so that together, we can ensure inclusivity and assist every learner by providing an equal and fair opportunity to achieve. So if you have concerns about the progress and achievements of your children in | comparison to their oral ability or abilities in other areas, do seek out professional advice as soon as possible. There is no known scientific ‘cure’ for autism. However, with the right intervention children and individuals with Autism can learn life skills that allow them to integrate into mainstream society and have a better quality of life. At Think Psychological Services, we have helped many children integrate into schools with “normally” developing children. These children are still “autistic” but they have been trained with skills that help integrate into the ‘mainstream’. This is not an overnight cure, but takes an extended period of intensive intervention by trained professionals. ‘WHEN IS THE EARLIEST AGE IN WHICH A CHILD CAN BE DIAGNOSED AND GIVEN TREATMENT FOR AUTISM? WHY THIS AGE, AND NOT SAY, EARLIER? At Think Psychological Services, we have specialists trained, certified and registered to diagnose children 18 months old and above. Although autism is hard to diagnose before 24 months, symptoms often surface between 12 and 18 months. If signs are detected by 18 months of age, intensive treatment may be able to help the child “rewire” their thinking and reverse the symptoms. WHAT ARE SOME RED FLAGS OF AUTISM RISK? Every child on the autism spectrum has difficulties, at least to some degree, in the following three areas: - Communication or language anomalies or delay - Social interaction difficulties - Restrictive Interests, Repetitive Behaviours and Sensory Sensitivities For more information on Autism, please visit our website http://think-psych.com/child-psychologist-services/child-psychologist-counsellor/autism-spectrum- disorder/ aC SIDI ULSL UROL Va eta TTA) - Absence of eye contact (e.g. look at you when being fed). EXPOSURE OF TECHNOLOGY TO YOUNG CHILDREN 1, IDEAL AGE FOR PARENTS TO INTRODUCE TECHNOLOGY TO THEIR KIDS It is difficult to determine the most ideal age a child should be exposed to technology. The fact is technology is so easily available in our society ‘some parents may feel it is difficult to be in control of the exposure. Technology is wonderful when used in an appropriate way. The problem is that a lot of the content involved in technology is inappropriate for children (example, violence). Repeated exposure to such content would be destructive for a child. When a child starts using devices too early, this would mean that they would have less opportunity to enhance other areas that are more important to a developing child. E.g social interactions, outdoor play, language. If parents feel that they can learn something from technology it is probably more effective for a child to learn through relationships and having a parent or another adult teach them through interaction. 2. BEST WAY TO USE TECHNOLOGY The best way to introduce technology to kids is to use it as a form of interaction with the child. For example, if using it for educational reasons, parents should be teaching them using the technology as an aid and not just leaving the child to click and guess answers from an educational program.Alternatively, it could be used to play a two-player game with the child thus incorporating some social aspects to it. When technology is introduced to kids, usage should be closely monitored by parents. Quite often kids are left to use devices independently. This is highly dangerous as kids may access inappropriate content. THINK PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICE: www.think-psych.com SUPREMEPARENTS 3. ON A PSYCHOLOGICAL LEVEL, WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF EXPOSING TECHNOLOGY TO CHILDREN AT A VERY TENDER AGE? It is best not to expose children under the age of 5 to technology until they have good and appropriate social and communication skills. Even then, their usage should be closely monitored and limited. Children can get addicted to technology pretty easily as they get instant rewards/response from. technological devices. For example, when the child tap ‘on an icon they get an immediate respond (cause and effect), or when they win a game and move on to the next level, they feel a sense of achievement. From a developmental perspective young children learn best through their social interaction with others, technology can impede and restrict appropriate social skills development. When a child spends too much time on technology, it is taking away time from other important aspects of the developing child. Such as learning appropriate social behaviours and relational interaction. 4, SOME IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS PARENTS ‘SHOULD TAKE WHEN INTRODUCING TECHNOLOGY Parent needs to consider what their child will be using the technology for. It cannot be stressed enough that parental guidance and monitoring of technology usage is very important. As much as there is lots of useful information on the internet, there are also a lot of inappropriate content for a child. Exposure to all these inappropriate content at a young age could be harmful toachild. The child should have limited time spent on technological devices so that the child would not be easily addicted to technology. There may be educational benefits from using technology to learn, however, it would be more beneficial for a child to learn these skills from their parents. For example, parents can bring the child to the library and teach them to do research there. This can have the added advantage of family bonding time.
