Investigating
Growing up, I was always asked about what I wanted to be when I grow up. This
question always crosses my mind till this day and one of my interests as a career, was fashion.
Fashion has a ton of subcategories in them like; fashion management, printmaking, blogging,
design, sewing, merchandiser, etc., but the category that interests me the most is fashion
designing.
About a few months ago, I was trying to look for ideas (See Appendix 1) for this project
and I came across one of my old sketchbooks where I found fashion sketches from primary
school. I asked myself, “How is it that I can create one of my designs and make it successful?”.
My mind clicked and I thought that it was the perfect project to do to learn more about the
fashion business, by making my own dress.
It was clear to me that this was going to be a big challenge. I knew a lot about the basics
of what is needed to make a dress, like pattern making and how you have to chose the right
materials, but I didn’t know how to actually make the product. During the process of thinking
about my idea, I thought that just making a dress was to simple to showcase as a project, so I
wanted to change it up. My idea was to make something that was eco-friendly and helpful to the
environment, which was inspired by my mom's job, who is a specialist in sustainability. With
many ways of making a sustainable dress, I will be using plastic bottle fabric from local fabric
company, that is specified in turning plastic bottles into fabric.
The source that I found is from a company called “Life Out Of Plastic”, also addressed as
LOOP. LOOP is a 100% “woman-owned” NGO that collects plastic bottles here in Peru and
process them to turn it into fabric and fleece by recycling bottles. In the website, I read all the
details about what LOOP is specialized in. For example, the process and the different steps of
their fabric production (See appendix 2). I have realized that this fabric is really unique, because
it was once many plastic bottles, and now after reading this website, I have a clear knowledge
Page 3
and understanding of the background information to this fabric that I will be using. I would say
that this source is reliable because it comes directly from the LOOP organization, but there are a
few limitations to it. Like for example, calculating the amount of bottles there is in each fabric
piece. There should have been a way to calculate the bottles used per yard of fabric on the site. If
this was found, then I could know how many bottles I recycled and how I made a difference to
the environment. (See appendix 3 for OPVL).
I have chosen the idea of making a dress out of recycled material because I think it will
be a good way to experience my interests and also it’s a good challenge to learn the basics of
fashion design for any future fashion careers. Apart from really enjoying the world of fashion, I
also like helping the environment. My family and I work really hard to do anything to help our
home. We recycle, conserve energy, carpool, and compost. For this project, I wanted to combine
two ideas in one product, so I came up with the idea of making a dress out of recycled materials.
Over the winter break, I took a four day pre-college (June 29th - July 2nd) course at the
Fashion Institute of Technology and got myself enrolled to a course called, “The Secret of
Private Branding for Retailers”. My main goal was to find a course, whether it was going to a
class or taking it online, to help me specifically with my personal project, but unfortunately, I
had no luck finding one. During these four days at FIT, I learned many things like how to design
and to build a collection of my own by using a season, fashion management, trends, different
colors for different seasons . We even took field trips to stores to see the stores “transition
colors”, the way the colors from the clothes transite to one season to the other. In my perspective
this was a really nice experience because with all the notes and knowledge that I gained taking
this pre-college course, it really helped me to figure out what type of style to make my dress in
order to make it in style, as I state in my specifications.
My object is to make an in-style dress so I could wear it in the future and the course I
took specifically helped me to understand to know what's in and what's out in fashion and by
looking through magazines, stores, and online websites, I would analyze patterns and styles that
Page 4
were seen in women's fashion. Public appearances, for inspiration, in social media (instagram &
facebook) helped me to see patterns used in clothing these days (See appendix 3). Not only did
this research helped me in learning what to design for my dress, but also to learn the basics of
stitching and pattern making to be able to get the fabric measurements and pieces done correctly.
My research also helped focus on learning about the fashion waste and its impact on the
environment, thus the fact that I want to help our community by using recycled fabric made from
plastic bottles. According to my research, clothing create landfills with the leftover materials
from factories and thrown out clothes, contaminating our areas. There is also water waste
because of the large quantities used to create fabrics. In my perspective from my research, it is
amazing to learn about the small things that create waste and pollution, especially those items
that you do not expect to be harmful for the environment.

Planning
My goal for this Personal Project is to learn how to sew and make a pattern so I can make
my final product of making a dress in style and out of recycled material. But before I actually
start the project, I need to learn lots of steps to get the outcome considered a level 7-8 on my
criteria rubric (See Appendix 5). For the dress making, I need to learn how to make a pattern,
how to sew, how to cut everything perfectly, how to design a dress, learning about trends and
what is in-style, etc.
A sign that I have accomplished my goal, is a well sewed dress. Even though I don't
have well developed sewing skills, I still want myself to follow a few specifications for it. There
needs to be no raw edges, and all the seams, edges, and stitches need to be well done. Basically,
the dress needs to be well made and neat by using the knowledge and understanding that was
used during investigation. This will be a display dress so it needs to be as presentable as possible.
Also, the dress needs to be in-style, which the class I took in New York helped me to identify
what this meant. Another thing that is part of the rubric criteria is that the final product needs to
match the final design exactly (See Appendix 6). The main thing on my rubric is that I need to
show and demonstrate my thorough knowledge and understanding skills from my research in my
final product of the dress. This will show that I did all my investigation and actually learned how
to do something new that I didn't know before.
In my planning stage, I had to make a calendar for me to stay on track and to know what
to do every week of personal project. For example, the first month was only investigation and I
divided that month by the different tasks I need to do. The second month was about planning and
I divided that up into specific tasks and then I kept doing that for all the different stages that
there is in personal project (investigation, plan, create, evaluate). Apart from my calendar, to
keep my process in check, I have a process journal that explains and shows all my thoughts,
research, designs and displays that I have to show my audience so they can see everything that I
have done throughout the whole project. I have pictures, drawings, fabric swatches that are
Page 6
evidence of my creating stage. Also, to be more creative, I will be making a short YouTube
video, by the end of project, to explain and show my my process of creating the dress and my
learning evidence.
My time management skills is something that I needed to improve on on this project.
Sometimes, with the school work that I had for my other classes, I would stay behind schedule
and everything needed to be delayed. Sometimes it also happened to me that I couldn't meet with
my supervisor because she was busy and couldn't check my work. For example, when everyone
else had 6 supervisor meetings, I had 5. I was always one supervisor meeting behind than
everyone else. During the vacation, I was out of town and I couldn't take my dress when
traveling because it was too many materials to bring on the plane with me. Our winter break was
the time where we were to do our creating stage but I had to start my product when I got back.
Writing entries as well was also very time consuming that some days I would forget to do them
because of the amount of homework that I had for different classes. Either way, because I missed
those weeks of the creating stage, I won't be completely on track like I planned it to be but that's
ok, because all plans change and it usually doesn't end up how you started it with.

Taking Action
I have now completed my Personal Project product (See appendix 7) and I must say that
it wasn’t easy at first. I did not have a sewing machine at home or near me, but I found out that
the school owns a few of them and so, I stayed after school for three days to finish my product.
When I got the sewing machine, at first I was really scared to use it because I didn't know how
to, but I previously watched a few youtube videos on how to set it up. Thankfully, all the sewing
machines were set up and ready to go when I got there. To practice, I brought some extra fabric
from home for stitching and settings on the machine. Once I felt ready, I started to sew and to be
honest, I was really nervous to start because it was my first time sewing and I didn't want to mess
up. I started off slow on the pedal and when I got comfortable with it, I would go a little faster.
Throughout the whole process, I did have some trouble with the machine. I had the thread come
out of its place many times and sometimes it would get stuck. There was no teacher to help me
because she was on a school trip so, I went on youtube and searched on how to fix the sewing
machine when these problems occur.
My dress followed all the design specifications that I made for it. I have created a well
made dress and I showed all my knowledge and what I have learned in a video that shows all my
process (from cutting the fabric until the end of the sewing/gluing). There are a few raw edges
shown but, they will not be visible when presented on my mannequin because it will be folded.
The dress was exactly made by following the design and the pattern made to show that it is
in-style following the cut outs trend of the design.
On the day of my presentation, I will be showing a video that I made to from the
beginning of the whole taking action part of my project. I showed all my pattern making, fabric
cutting, and sewing techniques. Apart from the video, the actual dress will be displayed on the
day of the presentation. I found a mannequin from school that is allowing me to use it so I can
display my work in a neat and professional way. Unfortunately, because I decided to make this a
display dress only, I won't be wearing the dress because I did not add a zipper to the product.
Page 8
Finally, my mom and I came up with a great idea to make a tag and add it to the dress to
represent that the dress is recycled. We came up with the phrase “I was once a bottle...” to make
this dress to represent my global context that the fabric used was once plastic bottles.
I specifically wanted to use thread that was a totally different color than my fabric so it
would be more noticeable to see my stitching and my mistakes (See appendix 8). Because I am a
first time sewer and I learned how to use a sewing machine in three days, you can see my
mistakes in the stitching. Some of the lines aren't straight because they moved out of place. Also,
because I didn't know how to do advance stitching for the seams, I had previously bought some
fabric glue and had some leftover and used it on the seams of the top. Since this dress is only for
presentation and the important was to learn how to sew everything together, I wasn't so worried
about how the seams were going to look so I used the glue. My dress followed all the design
specifications that I made for it and I have recorded everything I did from beginning to end and I
feel like a show a good understanding of the knew knowledge I have encountered. It all shows
my personal engagement of wanting to learn the basics of a possible new career that I will be
trying out. Either way, out of all the problems I encountered and all the little flaws that it had
from the sewing, I really liked how everything turned out and I am proud that I have learned
everything by myself.
Page 9
Reflecting
At the end of the making of the project, I've realized that my dress follows my rubric
criteria that I created. There are a few raw edges shown but, they will not be viewable when
presented on my mannequin because it will be folded. The dress was exactly made by following
the design and the dress shows an in-style trend in the cut outs of the design. This criteria really
helped me on keeping track of what are the specific details that I have to accomplish during the
making of this dress.
Over all, my dress was a complete success. I worked really hard in learning how to work
a machine and how to sew everything like I wanted it. I feel like I learned a lot and have
increased my knowledge since the beginning of this project. At first, I did not know how to use
or work a sewing machine at all. I did have some previous knowledge on how to make a skirt
like the one I made but I did not know how to make cut outs or seams. I used my knowledge and
thinking skills in finding out a way how I was going to add in the black bands on the bottom of
both skirt and top AND also making the cut outs. It was difficult at first but then I got the hang of
it. Now that I have completed this dress, I realized that it is not that hard to make a clothing item,
it just takes practice to make it right.
The Global Context I chose was personal and cultural expression, which is about
discovering and expressing ideas, beliefs, feelings, culture, and values to ourselves. As of all the
global context categories, this was the one that best described my project and I developed an
understatement to this global context throughout my project. The choice of categorizing this
project as personal and cultural expression is to show the connections to my life, representing
this project for being a new passion that I want to discover, a passion which I might be
continuing in the future. Also in my global context, we have the environmental part to it. One
reason why I wanted to do this eco-friendly dress is because of the impact there is to the
environment and making our world a better place by reducing any type of pollution is very
important. This dress has a very low carbon footprint and it is important to me that it is low in
Page 10
carbon and is recyclable because with little change like this, it can really make a difference to the
world.
As an IB learner, I could say that one profile that I have discovered throughout my whole
process of this project is being a risk taker. I took a huge risk by trying something new and
different. At first, it was a very challenging project for me but I stuck to a project and continued
learning new skills and discoveries in this project, which makes me a risk taker, especially if it’s
by myself. I could have not taught myself well and ruined my dress. When it came to sewing, I
was all on my own with the sewing machine and no teacher. I had to figure how to use it on my
own, and when stitching, I was really scared that my dress was going to turn out bad but I took
the risk in doing it and it turned out to be better than I expected it to be. I ended up having some
strengths and weaknesses, like for example, one thing that I think I can improve on, is sewing.
As a first time learner, I had overcome many challenges on my own with no help. Yet, you can
see that on my stitches, in some parts they are not going very straight. Also, because I think I set
the sewing machine wrong, I had some excess thread coming out of the bottom of my stitches.
To improve, I think that I just have to keep on trying to sew on the sewing machine and maybe
need some professional help to make sure that I am doing everything properly. One of my
strengths out of all this project, apart from learning by myself and being successful, is cutting my
fabric by making a pattern. At first, I found it useless to make a pattern on my dress but, I found
that it helped a lot with cutting out the fabric (See Appendix 9). It kept my measurements exactly
the same, it helped me cut out the fabric straight, and it was good to have a pattern because if u
messed up on any fabric pieces, you have it to start over. For example, it happened to me that I
forgot my seams on my top after I cut it out. So, I used the pattern again but added my one-inch
seam for sewing.
This project will definitely impact on my future learning. Not only will this be going on
my portfolio to apply for universities but, it will also help me to make future projects. I found
this project fun to do, that I am considering on putting this knowledge learned into use and create
another dress for my own personal use. The whole process of this project made me reflect on my
Page 11
future and idea of wanting to be a fashion designer. It is a long process to do and there is a lot of
competition in the fashion business, but it seems a lot of fun to do as a daily job. I am still not
sure for what I will be studying in the future or what I am wanting to be when I grow up, but this
project has definitely helped me to have this as one of my top five jobs in the future. As of being
eco-friendly, I would like to continue in being a responsible designer and probably wanting to do
a sustainable fashion career because I am interested in both fashion and saving the planet as
much as possible. My personal project was definitely a success and I am glad that I had chosen
to do a dress because now I have experienced what it actually means to be a fashion designer and
I am looking forward to new projects like this in the future.
