The reasons that it is so vital to our attack being that it (1) reduces the aggressive- ness of the interior linemen and (2) stablizes the linebacker and interior line play and (3) it gives the opportunity to our back to work the entire line of scrimmage much the same as the Counter. 34 DRAW TE. Throw the ball to the split end or L. 63 CHAPTER V PASSING PHILOSOPHY We are run oriented, but feel that it is imperative we throw effectively. In an effort to increase our effectiveness we feel our passing must be very simple and unsophisticated to permit a maximum of repetition and understanding. We feel also that we must encounter a minimum number of defenses. Based on this, all of our basic routes come out of the running action in our basic offense. This puts most of the defenses we play into a normal rotation. our Q.B. now need worry only about a corner, safety, or a linebacker force. With this kind of secondary play against us we do not key defensive people. We watch only our offensive receivers and try to throw the wall to one of them in the open. Our passing game can best be divided into three basic cuts; one man cuts to the tight end side, two man cuts to the tight end side, and one man cuts to the split end side. ‘The one man cut to the tight end side is thrown out of the basic veer action. ‘The two man cut to the tight ena side is thrown out of any one of three option action: 64 (1) the veer, (2) the counter option, and (3) the lead option. The one man cut to the split end side is thrown out of the lead option action. Timing, as everyone knows, is extremely important in the passing game. In our gituation we are concerned more with the timing as it relates to the depth or vertical seams. It includes a draw to each back and one basic dropback pass. We use base blocking on our pass protection. Regardless of rush, we never switch, That relieves any possibility of confusion. The linemen with down linemen on thom set immediately while linemen coverta by linebackers get depth from the line of scrimmage so they can pick up the linebackers if they stunt away from their initial alignment. The technique is the same for all down linemen. on the snap they set quickly to the inside, inviting the outside rush. As the defenisve lineman makes his charge, the offensive lineman hits with the width of this chest and his head to the outside, he tries to neutralize the defensive charge and if possible disengages himsel€ from the defender. If he is unable to do this and the defender locks on, he tries to drive him to the outside and deeper than the quaterback. If the defender attempts an inside rush, we want the offensive man to put him on his inside shoulder and run him into the pile in the middle. Obviously, if a lineman has a linebacker as his assignment and the linebacker goes into the pass defense, the offensive lineman then helps on any leakage in the protection. Running back His technique on the end is the same ag the linemen. He sets to the inside inviting an outside xush. As the defensive end makes his charge the running back hits him with the width of his chest and his head to the outside. He tries to neutralize the defensive charge, and if possible disengages himself from the defender. If the defender locks on, he tries to drive him to the outside and deep past the quarterback. If the defender attempts an inside rush, we want the running back to put him on his inside shoulder and run him into the pile in the middle. If the linebacker or end assigned to running back goes into the Pass Coverage, the running back will flare to the outside uncovering Las L comes across the middle. on an eight man front the linemen block out on angles and the center and the running back will take care of the two inside men. B BB —€ Gio ® BIGBRR Oo on a 5-3 or 7-1, the center will block the nose guard if his charge is straight or to his right. ‘The running back will block him if his charge is to the center's left. B P £€ TNTB OE eFeae cd o— 129 130 53 PASS We have one basic dropback pas It's main purpose is to take advantage of quick pressure from the ‘outside. To run the option, we would prefer to have a soft center. Ss ‘Sq h08L | [oS the 7.8. lines up in auch a way that he cannot be covered by a linebacker from the inside. He will release the same way that he does on 13 veer. He is the primary receiver and if he is to get the ball, he will get it in a hurry. TE R Gets off line of scrimmage with all the speed he has, gathers himself at about twelve yards and runs a curl at 14-16 yards. Fullback Plares and as he goes, picks up the end man on the line of scrimmage. If he is coming, the fullback snaps his head around anticipating the ball. £ Gives hard pressure downfield for 2 counts then comes across the middle finding an open spot and trying to get into the vision of the passer. Quarterback The quarterback checks the T.£. as he releases off the line of scrimmage. If the T.E. is open, the quarterback dumps the football. If the T.B, is covered, the quaxterback retreats to a depth of 7-9 yards or where he can see and picks up the flat coverage. The second receiver is R. If he is covered, he looks to the fullback. If he sis covered, the quarterbacks tries to pick up L in the middle and as a last resort, the running back. The most that we have been able to do to date is go through the first 3 receivers. we have found however, that the defenses used by our opponents has made the 3 receivers awfully difficult to cover if we execute properly. Of course, we have all individual cuts available. However, the only ones we involve in individual cuts are L & R. I realize this eliminates many fine pass cuts, but it is a waste of time to try to do more than can be done properly. 131 132 GLOSSARY OF TERMS. To do this, we would have to force them into a situation of more learning and more teaching resulting in a better chance of mental error. if possible the defense had to be made more hesitant. This is a little difficult because we have to remember whatever we did had to requixe a minimum amount of learning on our part. After discussing the problem the staff felt that phases of our attack run from the unbalanced line would probably be the answer to our problem. We were concerned about the alignment of the defense against the unbalanced line. Those teams in the seven man forcing unit could either line up on the ball or on the formation. This would require recognition on the part of our quarterback at the line of scrimmage. This is a real problem ‘but not insurmountable. our discussion of the unbalanced line in the following pages represent those things that have happened to us during the past three years. Not what could or might happen. First of all, the defense appears to have lost sone of the aggressiveness. The stunts are not as frequent nor as involved. When the same stunt is run against the balanced and unbalanced line it does not appear to be as sound. If the defense is kept on the formation, the mechanics change a bit for those on the longside. We have noticed that the angle of fill for the secondary plus the timing of the fill is different. particularly on the short side. Most of our opponents use the 5-2 defense. The filma indicate that the nose no longer can play as a nose guard but more as a defensive tackle on an even defense. the L.B. depending on which way we go unbalanced is no longer a right or left L.B,, but a middle L.B. That is different. ‘The distance of the defensive tackle and end from the ball is not the same, ner is their angle on stunts. The defensive end on our open side or split end side now must play with an end in tight, but his @istance from the ball is much different and we feel much more difficult to execute his responsibilty. At the outset we stated that we felt it imperative to reduce the aggressiveness of the defense by requiring more learning. From the films we feel this has been accomplished to degree because: 1) we get fewer stunts; 2) we have seen on film more menta] errors; 3) evidently the veer blocking has di couraged the shading of the defense; 4) the responsibilities on the corner seem more stable or 1 should say more predictable. This apparently has been accomplished with a minimum amount of learning on our part. In general, we have found the middle trapping game to be worthwhile: the counters both ways to be very effective; the counter option seems to lend itself more easily to the short side; the passing game though restricted seams very effective. I want to add a word of caution, these statements we have made are a result of only three years of study and application, and I am sure that the defense won't permit some of the freedom that we now enjoy. I also would like to re-state that the unbalanced line is not our basic attack. It is of a nuiscance value. we do feel, however, that the unbalanced attack has won several games for us when the defense was not sufficiently schooled. 140 ‘saat’ | ‘bps | caiglasy |
