The respondents of this study are divided into two major strata: (1) professionals

who graduated from the Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Nursing, Medical
Technology and Physical Therapy and (2) graduating students currently taking up the
above-mentioned degrees in Dumaguete City. The professional respondents are from
Silliman University Medical Center Inc., Holy Child Hospital, Negros Oriental Provincial
Hospital and from respected clinical laboratories around Dumaguete City. For the
students, the researchers obtained permission to conduct their survey from Silliman
University, Negros Oriental State University and Foundation University.

Methodology
For this study, the researchers employed the use of samples in order to obtain
data from the respondents in a cost-efficient manner. In order to determine the sample
size, the Slovin’s formula was used (refer to Appendix _). In applying the Slovin’s
formula for the study’s population, the entire population - students and professionals -
was used to compute the overall sample size.
The total population as determined by the researchers is 966 and the computed
sample size is 287. This sample size is then stratified among the different subgroups of
the population.
To get the sample sizes for the specific groups, the overall sample size was
prorated into the two major strata, and from there was prorated into the individual
groups using their sizes relative to the population. The actual computation can be found
in Appendix __.

Analysis of the Population and Survey Results

The students from Silliman University composed the largest number in the
population as well as of sample size. The opposite is true in the case of the clinical
laboratories, which composed the least number of the population and sample. But
among the two major groups of respondents, the professionals have a larger number
compared to the students, therefore forming a substantial effect on the results of the
survey (refer to Appendix_). Graduating students and degree holders of Bachelor of
Science in Nursing composed the greatest number of the respondents and the students
and graduates of Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy constituting the least.

Among the respondents who answered the questionnaires, a huge majority

indicated that they are not interested in taking up Master’s Degree in Public Health.

Figure 2.2 Professionals Interested in Pursuing MSPH in Silliman University

Among the 45 professionals interested in pursuing the degree in Silliman
University (refer to Appendix_ for the actual numbers), the 78% is composed of nurses
and the other 22% are medical technologists.

Figure 2.3 Students Interested in Pursuing MSPH in Silliman University

The Figure 2.3 shows that among those students surveyed, 19 are interested in
taking up Master of Science in Public Health (refer to Appendix ___) . Nursing students
compose the greatest portion (48%) of those who are interested in taking up the degree.
They are followed by Medical Technology students composing 28%, Biology students
constituting 22% and lastly, Physical Therapy students making up 6%.
Figure 2.4 Specializations Desired by Respondents

Since the Master of Science degree program in Public is designed with an

emphasis on mastering the skills in individual specialty areas within public health,
respondents were asked to rank Microbiology, Parasitology and Biostatistics from 1 to 3
according to their priority (1 being the highest and 3 being the lowest). With regard to
the required sample size for each group of respondents, the specialty area with the
lowest total is considered rank 1 and the highest total as rank 3.

Figure 2.5 School Year Desired by Students and Professionals

Based on the survey most students as well as professionals will want to take up
Master of Science in Public Health in SY 2016-2017. 14 out of the 45 professionals and
7 out of the 18 graduating students are interested in taking up the degree in SY
2016-2017.The rest are widely dispersed among the later years in the choices. The
success of the 2016-2017 batch could lead to the increase of enrollees in the later
years.
