MICROBIAL DESALINATION CELL

ABSTRACT

Desalination using microbial cell has now been emerging as a new technology for removing
water salinity, waste water management and electricity generation. A combination of
microbial fuel cell and electro dialysis plays a vital role in wastewater treatment and
desalination as an eco-friendly technology. The above process can be performed either
individually or combined with regular desalination systems. This paper studies about the
principle behind the functioning of microbial desalination cell using bacteriological media
and finds its application in the field of generation of hydrogen gas, removal of hardness,
desalination of sea water and brackish water. The operation is carried out under optimum
conditions.
