Period 2
Mrs. Muenker

My overall purpose of this Further Oral Activity was to showcase the effect of a rapper’s

influence on people. This activity relates to popular culture as they are celebrities and are widely

recognized for their genre of music and the actions they perform within their music and offstage.

This was a very interesting FOA topic for me because primarily I was talking about the

promotion of drug use in their songs, I have personally seen someone suffer from drug abuse and

have seen them lose their life over it, thus, I wanted to investigate whether the artists who are

known for their indulgence in Rap may be responsible for the increased drug abuse in society.

This activity further enhanced my knowledge on the uses of mass communication to portray

certain ideologies and how popular culture is shaped by the celebrities or the tastemakers.

To achieve this purpose, I decided to use the rapper Eminem and a new emerging artist

Lil Pump and compared their songs. I analysed the lyrics, showed the effects of the songs and

also showcased real life examples of the impact of their songs. This supported my FOA and

further proved my argument on the effect an artist using the medium of songs can have on

teenagers, adults and even other musicians as well.

However, I don’t believe my FOA was perfect and it had some flaws. First of all Lil

Pump is a 17 year old rapper who appeals to the teenage audience mostly and through contextual

research I found out he is a current drug abuser. Eminem was a previous drug abuser and his

songs during the period of the abuse contained promotional content for drugs. I did not analyse

that song of Eminem and instead chose to analyse a song where he is talking about his drug

abusing past but now that he’s recovered from it and trying to help others. This contains some

bias and may lead to a flawed argument.

Overall, I think I did a good job in my FOA by covering most if not all aspects of my

intended purpose.
