Antenna Assignment I

1. Find the HPBW and FNBW in radians and degrees for the normalized radiation intensity
a) U() = cos(2) cos(3) and b) U() = cos2(2) cos2(3) . Given that ( 0    900 ) and
( 0    3600 )

2. The normalized radiation intensity of an antenna is given by (i) U = sin2() sin2() and (ii)
U = sin2() sin3() The intensity exists only in the region ( 0    1800 ) and ( 0    1800
) and is zero elsewhere. Find the a) exact directivity b) approximate directivity (using
Kraus’ & Tai and Pereira’ formula) c) azimuthal and elevation plane HPBW in degrees
and radians.

3. The far-zone electric field intensity of an end fire array antenna, placed along the z-axis
and radiating into free space is given by E = cos[(cos +1)/4] e-jkr /r ( 0    1800 ), Find
the directivity using Kraus’ & Tai and Pereira’ formula.

4. The normalized far-zone field of an antenna is given by

E = (sin() cos2())0.5 ( 0    1800 ) and ( 0    900 , 2700    3600 ) and E = 0
elsewhere. Find the directivity (i) exact expression (ii) Kraus’s formula and (iii) Tai and
Perira’s formula.

5. A base station cellular communication system has a lossless antenna has a maximum gain
of 16 dB (above isotropic antenna) at 1.9GHz. Assuming the input power to the antenna is
8 watts, what is the maximum radiated power density at a distance of 500 meters.

6. A uniform plane wave is travelling in the positive z-direction. Find the polarization, sense
of rotation, axial ratio and the tilt angle when (i) Ex0 = Ey0 = 3 V/m,  = - /2 and (ii) Ex0
= 2 V/m, Ey0 = 4 V/m,  = /2. Sketch the wave polarization in both cases.
