Wedding Invitation Revision
Rationale
In this class, we focus most often on rhetorical choices created by the manipulation of alphabetic
textual communication. However, it’s equally important that we recognize the vast importance of
multimodal aspects on effective communication. Further, while genres of written communication
often seem stable from the outside, it is important that we recognize how they are only stabilized
for for and also how they can be changed to represent better social futures.
Assignment
In “For the Bride or Groom?,” Theresa Devine identifies several characteristics of wedding
invitations that appeal more to the bride
than the groom. She goes on to argue that
this genre ultimately manages to “represent
an unequal union” (Devitt, Reiff, and
Bawarshi 155).
The characteristics that she criticizes
include:
● Soft pastel colors
● Cute symbols
● Soft flowing writing
● Wording that emphasizes the bride
To the right is the template wedding
invitation from Microsoft Publisher. You will,
no doubt, recognize all of the
characteristics criticized by Devine. Using
whatever program you are comfortable with
(Microsoft Work, Microsoft Publisher,
Adobe InDesign, etc), revise the invitation
so that it addresses Devine’s concerns and
reflects a more equal union. Note that this
does not mean that you should create an
invitation that would appeal only to the
groom. Be sure to consider secondary
audiences as well (such as the families of
the bride and groom.)
Post your revised invitation as a .jpg file to your blog. Also write a brief introduction to your
revised invitation to describe how your revisions could appeal to all parties in the marriage.
