Grade 4

Classroom setup (seating, materials, organization, shape of the day)

The students sit in rows consisting of 2 to 4 students per row. One student who has
behavioural problems and sits alone near the door. All desks are facing the whiteboard. Another
student who needs an education assistant at all times, sits at the back of the classroom at a large
desk. My sponsor teacher tends to switch up the seating arrangements of the class every month
or so. Students get moved if they have trouble concentrating or if they do not get along with the
other students in their row. Materials such as pencils, pens, pencil crayons, glue, scissors, pencil
sharpeners, erasers and markers are kept in student’s desks. Furthermore, duotangs for spelling,
writing, science, math, and planners are kept in student’s desks. Students also keep books that
they have signed out from the library in their desk. My sponsor teacher keeps extra supplies such
as glue, scissors, pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks and duotangs in a cupboard on the far side of
the classroom. When students run out of these supplies they ask the teacher for more and the
teacher gets the supplies needed from the cupboard. Books for silent reading are kept at the back
of the classroom on a shelf. Other supplies such as jump math books, and duotangs are kept in
bins on shelves at the back of the classroom.

Classroom routines (morning, recess, lunch, PE, music, library, washroom breaks, moving
within the classroom, other transitions, distribution and collection of materials and student
work)
My sponsor teacher has classroom routines that work well for the students and I will
maintain the same routines during my practicum. In the morning the students have silent reading
for half an hour and then they have snack time for about ten minutes. During this transition my
sponsor teacher uses a loud, clear, stern voice and instructs the students to put their reading
books away. She then picks students who are sitting quietly to go and get their snacks out of their
back packs in the hallway. After snack time my sponsor teacher does a countdown from 10 for
students to put their snack kits away. I will use the same vocal cues and countdowns that my
sponsor teacher uses during transitions. Usually after snack my sponsor teachers does Math or
Language Arts with the students. Students have recess in the morning at 10:00 and the students
get an afternoon recess at 1:05 in the afternoon. At 11:10 students get their lunch outside
playtime and then they eat their lunch in the classroom at 11:55. During this time I will supervise
the students. After eating lunch the students fill out their planner and get the teacher to check it.
This is the main communication with parents. Students then read with a partner for 15 minutes.
Students get roughly 15 minutes to eat their lunch. Students get PE Tuesday mornings at 9:00
and Thursday afternoons at 1:30. Students are expected to have their indoor shoes on for PE but
they are not expected to change into gym strip. On Wednesdays the students have Fine Arts in
the morning at 9:30 and they have Fine Arts on Thursdays in the afternoon at 1:20. I will take the
students to the Fine Arts module and pick them up after the 50 minute blocks. On Wednesday
mornings after the attendance is taken, the students have library for roughly 30 minutes. During
this time the teacher takes students to the library where the librarian reads a book to the students
and then allows the them to renew, return or checkout new books. When students have to use the
washroom they must first ask for the teachers permission before they can go. Only one student is
allowed to go at a time. Students are expected to walk quietly and be respectful of others when
moving in the classroom. These expectations apply to students when they are lining up at the
door, putting supplies away or transitioning from one activity to another. For the distribution of
materials I will either hand it out myself or asks for volunteers to hand out the supplies. When I
want to collect materials I will sometimes gets students to help or I will just collects the materials
myself. If I want to collect students work for marking I will instruct the students to put their
work in assigned bins at the back of the class. At the end of the day students are expected to clear
off their desks, tidy their floor area and stack their chairs at the back of the classroom.
Management strategies
To get the attention of students I will project my voice or use a clapping strategy where
students mimic the sequence of claps I do. I will lead discussions in the classroom and
sometimes allow for students to lead discussions depending on the activity or lesson. Students
may put their hand up during discussions if they have any comments that they would like to
share with the class. The classroom rules are straightforward, students are expected to respect the
teacher, respect others and respect themselves. There is no shouting in the classroom. Students
who are disruptive or who do not listen will be dealt with appropriately. I will remind students of
the expectations and hold them to be accountable for actions. If students continue to misbehave I
will talk to them in private and discuss why they are misbehaving and look for solutions.
Students who waste time or continue to be disruptive will owe me the time at recess or lunch. I
may have some students work in the hallway if they have trouble concentrating. If students are
not getting along, I will pull both students aside and talk to them. Depending on the situation I
may have students apologize to each other and look for ways to resolve their problems or I may
ask them to give each other space. I will use positive reinforcement every day, be encouraging
and acknowledge students for their good behavior. If students are at risk of harming themselves
or others they will be removed from the classroom immediately.

Classroom tasks
Attendance is taken in the morning and right after lunch. After the attendance is taken it
is hung on the outside of the door, picked up and taken to the office. Classroom helpers will be
chosen at random. These helpers will assist with distributing and collecting materials in the
classroom and setting up and putting away equipment in the gym during PE. Newsletters are
sent home with students when there are any important events, school activities or other important
information that needs to be communicated to parents. Students write down important
information regarding the classroom, home reading and homework in their planners. Students are
expected to have their parents read and sign their planners. To monitor work completion I will
have a class list and keep track of students who have not finished their assignments. Students
who do not complete assignments will be expected to come in at recess or lunch play time to get
their work done. Homework will not be assigned regularly but it may be assigned to students
who have missed school, are struggling in certain subjects or need extra practice. Furthermore, if
students do not complete assigned homework I will have them come in at recess or lunch to help
them get their work done. Finally, I will give students who need extra practice assigned reading
or worksheets to take home to complete.

Environment
I will display student’s work at the back of the classroom on the wall and outside the
classroom on a bulletin board. Students are responsible for keeping their desks and floor area
clean. If I see that students desks are messy or they are unorganized I will have them clean their
desks. Students will be expected to stack their chairs and clear off their desks at the end of the
day. Any activities that involve clean up will be done right after the activity.

Potential consequences for not meeting expectations

If I have already sat down and talked with a student who is not meeting expectations I
will have to get their parents involved. I will meet with their parents or call home and discuss
strategies and look for solutions to help their student succeed. I will also contact parents if their
child is not getting their work done on a regular basis or struggling in certain subjects, or having
behavioral issues in the class. By contacting the parents and having their support I feel it will
help students who are not meeting expectations to get back on track and succeed.

Other areas
One student has behavioural issues and is prone to have angry outbursts. I will work with my
sponsor teacher and look for ways to deal with this student and try to prevent his angry outbursts
before they happen. I will let this student work in the hallway or let him work in the resource
room.
