ASENS012/MCENS023 Mechanics of Solids - Fall 2007: Homework 6 Due at Start of Class on Friday, 19 October 2007 Problem 1. Solution of beam bending by elasticity equations. Consider a cantilever beam with a rectangular corss section as shown in the figure below. The beam is calmped at x = 0 and free at x = L. The stress distributions are known to be Oxx = axy Oyy = Tee = Oxz = Oy: = a Oxy = -S 2 ) =0 where (a, b) are constnats. n 1.1 Determine the stress vector T acting on the surface of the beam cross section at x = 0 where nis the outward normal unit vector from the beam cross section. 1.2. Determine the constants (a, b) by applying the zero shear stress at the top and bottom of the beam cross section, and by equating the transverse force P acting at the end of the beam to be equal to the area integral of the shear stress oy. 1.3. Solve for the displacements (x, v) by applying the appropriate boundary conditions of the beam. 1.4 Discuss any differences between the present solution and the solution obtained using an ele- mentary beam bening theory. + | | i a 2 + Hit for pwd ~ prtlon 13, Apt. compating u Bu from jutegraloig Sa © Byy ard sudatitatin MES Eu, You ne foul of the res (tg 2 pret FOE A tm Set Fad=¢, BC4)= oe & rakegnte Fide 1 ght the se- bependanct Timm Are rt4) G+G44=° o Gly) = en te obtain a dopin dna Tome 2 ule Slon cbiwn 6 4G & other to ra tepriom constmds from B.C.
